According to exclusive information leaked by 9to5mac , Apple is preparing an important update for AirPods headphones at the WWDC event, which will take place on June 9.
Most notably, iOS 26 will allow users to control the iPhone or iPad camera by tapping on their AirPods, possibly in conjunction with a timer so that iPhone users don’t have to touch their ears when taking photos.
With the upcoming software release, AirPods will also be able to detect when a user has fallen asleep and automatically pause audio. It’s unclear whether the new feature will need to be paired with the Apple Watch, which currently tracks sleep.
Apple could also add new head gestures, expanding the ability to adjust volume with Conversation Awareness, the AirPods feature that lowers the volume when you talk. Last year, Apple added nod-to-answer and shake-to-decline gestures.
The next improvement is a new "studio-quality" microphone mode for AirPods, which could be similar to the iPhone 16's Audio Mix, which removes background noise from videos . The new feature makes Apple's headphones a rival to lavalier microphones, which are often used by content creators.
Finally, Apple is trying to improve the ability to connect AirPods to shared iPads by simplifying the process, which is especially useful in classrooms where multiple students use the same device.
It’s unclear whether these rumored features will work on all AirPods, or if some of them may be limited to the AirPods Pro. 9to5Mac notes that Apple may “choose to delay or adjust” AirPods features before they’re announced.
Apple's WWDC 2025 keynote will begin on June 9. Apple is expected to announce iOS 26 and macOS 26 with major improvements.
