VinMotion Chairman: “Make in Vietnam” Robots Will Reach Out to the World

(Dan Tri) - Just 5 months after its establishment, VinMotion has had 5 versions of humanoid robots. All were developed by a team of domestic engineers who mastered the process from AZ.

Recently, a video of a robot said to be from Vingroup Corporation appeared on social media. The video shows that the robot has the ability to simulate human movement, move on two legs and wave hello.

Notably, on the chest of this robot model is the logo of Vingroup Corporation with the words VinMotion, a technology company belonging to the Vingroup ecosystem, making many people believe that this is a product researched and tested by Vietnam.

As soon as the video appeared, it received a lot of attention and sharing from social network users.

The reporter had a conversation with VinMotion Chairman, Mr. Nguyen Trung Quan, to better understand the most "curious" company in Vietnam at present.

From “super-fast” start to autonomous technology platform

Images of a humanoid robot branded Motion have just been circulating on social media, even though the company was founded less than half a year ago. Is this really a VinMotion product or just an AI product, sir?

- Yes, that's exactly our product. This humanoid robot is still in the testing phase and is version number 5.

Thus, VinMotion has managed to test 4 versions in just a few months of establishment. To have such a "terrifying" speed, surely VinMotion must have imported technology or had a foreign partner to work with?

- We would like to confirm that this humanoid robot is 100% “Made in Vietnam”, the result of the design, manufacturing and development process from hardware to software by the VinMotion engineering team. Although we have only been established for a few months, we have deployed and continuously improved up to 5 versions. The entire process from idea to finished product is carried out by the VinMotion team.

Can you share what processes and technologies VinMotion has mastered to create 100% "Make in Vietnam" robots?

- We master almost all processes from hardware design, electronics, software and controller for robots. However, although we are proud of this start, we do not consider this a perfect product.

There are still many things we need to perfect and upgrade to have a satisfactory product. Currently, we are also developing R&D in parallel for models with different design principles to continue upgrading the product.

A company that is only a few months old has 100% control over the entire R&D (research and development) process to create high-tech products such as humanoid robots, even up to 5 versions as you said, what has enabled your company to do this?

- It is true that the company is young (VinMotion was founded in January) but our team is made up of experienced people in the field of robotics from Vietnam and abroad.

We also have the contribution of world- leading experts such as Mr. Le Minh, hardware director - who has 10 years of experience at the world's leading robotics corporations such as GE HealthCare Robotics and Aldebaran Robotics; product owner of the NAO project - an iconic humanoid robot with more than 20,000 units deployed in more than 70 countries.

I myself was awarded the best doctoral thesis in my program at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) - the world's leading university in robotics, contributing to the development of groundbreaking projects such as the MIT Cheetah robot.

Therefore, the results to date are the sweet fruit of many years of experience accumulated by VinMotion's leadership team and industry experts. In particular, VinMotion would hardly have the current products without the strong, comprehensive support from Vingroup Chairman Pham Nhat Vuong and the Vingroup ecosystem.

Golden opportunity to bring Vietnamese intelligence and technology to the world

What is special about the company's first robot models and what jobs can they be applied to, sir?

- Currently, the Motion robot is only at the stage of performing some basic functions such as walking, object recognition, simple communication... Although still modest, this is the first step to completing a product that integrates both hardware and software "Make in Vietnam".

Mr. Nguyen Trung Quan, Chairman of VinMotion

In the long term, we focus on developing general-purpose humanoid robots, which are multi-purpose humanoid robots that are highly adaptable and can perform many tasks to replace humans in many different industries.

Specifically, how can we expect the next products to be applied, sir?

- We are improving our robots to be more flexible, durable and capable of performing more useful tasks. Our perspective is not to create a product “for show”, but to develop products that are truly useful and feasible in everyday life.

We are currently focusing on market research in three main areas. One is the service - entertainment group such as receptionists, tour guides, customer care in hotels, showrooms. Two is the supporting industry with robots replacing humans in many operations in the production or warehouse environment. Three is the group of robots that help with household chores, from cleaning, cleaning to interacting, companionship, and even taking care of children or the elderly.

In addition to the current robot model, does VinMotion have any plans to develop technology or products that are different from current robot models in the world?

- We are working in parallel on a special prototype called SuperMotion - a robot line with superior physical mobility compared to current humanoid models. The goal is to serve harsher environments such as heavy industrial plants.

I can’t reveal more details about this particular product at the moment as it is still under development. However, we hope to announce it later this year.

What is VinMotion's vision in the humanoid robot industry in Vietnam as well as the world, sir?

- We have a very clear vision: VinMotion aims to become the world's leading company in multi-purpose humanoid robots - not only in terms of technology but also a symbol of Vietnamese creativity, bravery and intelligence on the global technology map.

Is it too ambitious for a very young company, originating from Vietnam, to aim to become the world's leading humanoid robot company, sir?

- I think if Vietnamese people do not dream big, we will always be left behind. The world is in a very fast-changing phase in the field of robotics, and if we do not start now, we will miss a historic opportunity.

Of course, reaching the goal is not a matter of one or two days, but we have faith, serious investment, a good team and a clear strategy. We do not set goals to motivate ourselves, but to act step by step, with a receptive but determined spirit.

Mastering this core technology will create momentum for Vingroup in general to be much more favorable in mastering advanced technology in many fields requiring high technology in the future.

So, in your opinion, what opportunities does Vietnam have in the current extremely hot humanoid robot competition in the world and how can VinMotion contribute to Vietnam?

- I think this is the golden time for Vietnam to make its mark on the world technology map. The US is still the leading country in research, but the production and deployment costs there are very high. Although China has the advantage of the supply chain, it faces a “trust barrier” - especially from the US and Europe.

In that context, Vietnam has emerged as a new technology manufacturing center: reasonable costs, highly skilled engineers, neutral and trustworthy position in the international arena. That is the opportunity for us to enter this race.

At the same time, we cooperate deeply with international scientists, update the latest technology, and build a highly applicable intelligent robot ecosystem.

In particular, with strong financial support and a comprehensive technology ecosystem from Vingroup Corporation, VinMotion has all the conditions to break through and realize its vision: bringing Vietnamese intelligence and technology to the world, becoming the leading global humanoid robot company.
