These are the first electric garbage trucks in Vietnam, initially operating under a pilot program, according to a UNDP announcement.
The pilot project to replace some manual collection vehicles and internal combustion engine trucks with specialized four-wheel electric vehicles is in line with the goal of Hue City and Thua Thien - Hue Province in developing a public transport system towards green transport, the statement quoted Mr. Vo Le Nhat, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee.
“Thereby, the image of Hue city with the titles: 'ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City'; 'National Green City' will continue to be promoted in the eyes of tourists and international friends," said Mr. Nhat.
Mr. Shimonishi Kiyoshi, Deputy Consul General of Japan in Vietnam, affirmed that Japan will cooperate with partner countries to support Vietnam in reducing carbon emissions by using renewable energy and other mechanisms within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).
Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Vietnam, also highly appreciated the cooperation of Thua Thien - Hue province in the field of green transport.
The project “Promoting sustainable transition towards electric vehicles in Vietnam” implemented by UNDP and supported by the Government of Japan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by strengthening the ecosystem for electric vehicles and green transport at the national level.
Activities in Hue City will serve as a model to showcase the feasibility and benefits of green transport. The project will also support the development of a national ecosystem for electric vehicles, including input into a national roadmap, policies, incentives and charging infrastructure plans.
