With 20km of coastline, mangrove forests, and a dense river system, Can Gio has great potential for service and tourism development. However, the current reality of the island district is still not commensurate with the natural advantages.

According to Dan Tri reporters in early March, at the beach near the center of Can Thanh town, fishermen exploit seafood on a small scale, the harvested products are fish, clams, oysters, snails...
According to a fisherman, the bustling activity on the beach occurs early in the morning, when the tide recedes far from shore. "I usually prioritize finding seafood that sells well, such as snails. For each kilogram of snails caught, tourists can buy them for 300,000 VND," said the fisherman.

Recently, the island district government has encouraged fishermen to switch to larger-scale and more systematic fishing. This encouragement has helped improve the income of local fishermen.

Walking along the coast towards the end of Can Thanh town, it is not difficult to see piles of garbage.

The rocky beach along the coast is also very wild, not invested in to create landscapes for tourists.

According to the reporter's records, the coastal area has many abandoned or completed constructions but there are no signs of finishing construction, no workers, machines or caretakers.

The nearly 10km long coastal road of Can Gio district, stretching from Can Thanh town to Long Hoa commune, has many resorts, hotels, and restaurants. However, the road has not been paved, and every time a vehicle passes by, it creates a cloud of dust and smoke.

30/4 Beach is one of the prominent destinations of Can Gio District. Since the project of the coastal urban area was implemented in 2007, the coastline has been surrounded by an iron fence of more than 600m. The iron fence is now rusty, many sections have been demolished by the people, while the coastal urban area remains almost "inactive".

In the center of Can Gio district, Sac Forest Square (Can Thanh town) started construction 20 years ago but until now it is still deserted, becoming a place for kite flying and raising cattle. Other items have not been invested in to attract tourists.

Ms. Hoa, a Can Gio resident, shared that after 6 p.m., all activities on the island district almost stopped. From around 8 p.m., the central area of the district was sparsely populated.
"The quiet nightlife has always been a characteristic of the island district. We are all used to this scene so we don't feel bored anymore," said Ms. Hoa.

At night, Duyen Hai Street (Can Thanh Town) - the main road of Can Gio beach area - has only a few restaurants. According to actual records, these restaurants are also deserted and have few customers.

At night, looking from Can Gio to the sea, you can clearly see the bright lights of Vung Tau. Talking to reporters, the leader of the People's Committee of Can Gio district expressed that although they are about 10km apart by sea, Vung Tau city is lit up all night long, while the island district of Ho Chi Minh City has almost stopped all activities, which has raised many concerns for the people and management levels.
"We are located right next to other people, they are developing like that, the lights are bright at night but here it is dark. Due to geographical location and limited infrastructure, inconvenient traffic connections, we have to accept it," the district leader acknowledged.
