The index of industrial production (IIP) for the whole industry in May 2025 increased by 5.1% compared to the previous month and increased by 9.4% compared to the same period last year. In the first 5 months of 2025, the IIP increased by 8.2% compared to the same period, the highest production level in the past 7 years.
Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, analyzed that this result was achieved because in the first 5 months of the year, many industries achieved stable growth, in line with the sustainable development goals of Ho Chi Minh City such as the processing and manufacturing industry with a production index increasing by 8.4%; the water supply and waste treatment industry increased by 2.0%...
The electricity production and distribution sector remained stable with a production index increasing by 0.7% and ensuring no power shortages occurred.
In particular, some industries continue to be the main driving force of the entire Ho Chi Minh City industry such as textiles, footwear, electronics, and processing and manufacturing industries...
In addition, the industrial production business community tends to equip rooftop solar power systems more and more popularly to reduce costs, take advantage of renewable energy, and meet green standards from international partners.
Statistics in the first 5 months of 2025 also showed that 23/29 secondary industries had an industrial production index increase compared to the same period; in which some industries had high growth rates, including: printing and copying of all kinds of records increased by 58.1%; production of beds, cabinets, tables, and chairs increased by 38.2%; production of electrical equipment increased by 36%; production of rubber and plastic products increased by 24.2%...
The production index of four key industries in the first five months of 2025 increased by 8.2% over the same period, equivalent to the growth rate of only industrial production. In addition, the production index of three traditional industries in the first five months of 2025 increased by 11.6% over the same period.
However, the labor index at industrial enterprises in May 2025 increased by only 0.6% compared to the previous month and increased by 2.6% compared to the same period. In the first 5 months of 2025, the labor index increased by 2.2% compared to the same period.
These figures indicate that the labor force in Ho Chi Minh City is shifting from simple labor to labor requiring higher skills. In particular, in the city's FDI business community, the trend of applying technology and automation is increasing, so the labor growth rate is quite slow.
It is forecasted that the industrial manufacturing industry will still face many challenges in the coming time, especially in the context of challenging export markets and trade defense barriers. Some businesses believe that they can take advantage of some promotional channels such as fairs and exhibitions to directly introduce products to customers, helping to increase the conversion rate from visitors to actual customers.
Along with that, appearing at domestic and international trade promotion events also demonstrates professionalism, prestige and commitment to sustainable development, building trust for both customers and partners.
"Vietnam's economy is increasingly integrating deeply into the global value chain, the need to connect with international partners and trade is more urgent than ever for domestic enterprises, especially the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) segment. However, most domestic enterprises still face many barriers when wanting to access foreign markets such as lack of market information, no network of partners, limitations in international negotiation skills and lack of effective connection platforms," said Ms. Nguyen Lan, Mice Eims Han Viet Limited Liability Company.
Regarding solutions for sustainable development of industrial production, Professor Tran Van Tho, an economic expert, pointed out that in the face of the volatile and uncertain world economic situation, Vietnamese industrial production enterprises should promote exploitation of export markets with which Vietnam has signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
On the other hand, if exports to the United States are forecast to face many difficulties in the coming time, Vietnamese enterprises need to proactively shift exports to some markets such as India, Europe...
"However, to penetrate and expand the export market for industrial production, Vietnam must turn to high-tech developed countries to attract investment in various forms such as joint ventures, especially small and medium enterprises. There are many opportunities from FTAs, but enterprises must also have certain internal strength to be able to exploit potential markets, technology, etc.," Professor Tran Van Tho added./.
