- Recently, a foul smell has been coming from Phai Loan Lake, Lang Son City (near Tam Thanh Primary School and near the intersection of Phan Huy Ich - Le Hong Phong Street, Tam Thanh Ward). This situation has been affecting the daily life and health of the people, teachers, students and the business of the shops around this area.

On April 11, sharing with reporters, many households, teachers, students and businesses near the Phai Loan lake area expressed their frustration and hoped that authorities at all levels and sectors would soon take action to resolve the foul odor emanating from here. Ms. Lo Thi Thao, at house number 28, Le Hong Phong street, block 3, Tam Thanh ward, Lang Son city shared: The foul odor from Phai Loan lake near my house has appeared since the beginning of January 2025 until now and has become more intense and unpleasant in the past 2 months, especially on hot, sunny days. My family sells breakfast, and due to the foul odor, there have been few customers recently, so the family has had to stop selling for the past 2 days. My family members, even though they stay indoors with the doors closed, still have to wear masks due to the unpleasant stench.

Thick, dense scum mixed with duckweed and garbage floats on the lake surface, giving off a foul smell.

Mr. Dang Tuan Hung, owner of Bo Ho grilled food restaurant, No. 42, Phan Huy Ich Street, Tam Thanh Ward, said: Previously, the restaurant had an average of more than 10 tables of customers per day, but now due to the stench from the lake, the number of customers coming to the restaurant has decreased significantly, every day there are only a few customers and they do not dare to sit for long because of the unpleasant stench. That affects the family's income. Not only that, it is also affecting the daily life and health of my family and surrounding households. I hope that the authorities will soon take action to handle this situation.

At noon on April 11, we witnessed the Phai Loan lake area near Tam Thanh Primary School and near the intersection of Phan Huy Ich and Le Hong Phong streets, Tam Thanh ward, Lang Son city, we clearly felt an unpleasant stench coming from here. According to observations, the lake surface here has accumulated many thick, dense scum patches, many of which have mold on the surface, mixed with duckweed and garbage floating on the water surface.

According to research, the stench from this area not only affects the environment, people's lives, and the urban beauty, but also affects the teaching and learning of teachers and students at Tam Thanh Primary School, Lang Son City. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet, a teacher at Tam Thanh Primary School, said: For many days now, when I go to school, my colleagues and I have to wear masks because of the stench from Phai Loan Lake. During class, we often have to close the windows to reduce the stench from coming in.

Hoang Dinh Huong, a student in class 3A6 at Tam Thanh Primary School, shared: Before, during meals, sleeping hours and in class, the teacher often reminded us to open the windows for ventilation, but recently, due to the stench coming from Phai Loan Lake, our class often has to close the windows. On many hot days, we feel very uncomfortable when we have to keep the windows closed...

Talking to us, Mr. Doan Duy Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tam Thanh Ward, Lang Son City said: We have received feedback from the people about the foul smell coming from Phai Loan Lake. The People's Committee of the ward has organized a field inspection and found this situation. Currently, the ward is investigating the cause and will recommend the functional department of the City People's Committee to soon inspect and handle it to stabilize the lives, activities, and studies of the people, teachers, and students in the affected area.

The Phai Loan Lake campus project has an area of ​​over 2.8 hectares, and was inaugurated and put up a signboard by the People's Committee of Lang Son City on June 13, 2023. The project aims to contribute to urban beautification and development, creating a space for entertainment and physical training for people. Given the foul smell coming from the lake, we hope that relevant authorities and agencies will soon inspect, determine the cause and take measures to stabilize the lives and health of people and ensure urban beauty in the area.
