The gaokao is the most important exam in China, deciding a student's future and potentially "making or breaking" a young person's career path. There is no age limit for taking the exam, as long as the candidate has sufficient documents certifying that they have completed high schooleducation .

According to Jiupai News, in 2008, Li Long (from Heilongjiang province, China) took the university entrance exam for the first time and scored 695 points, enough to be admitted to the medical school. However, due to his family's difficult circumstances, his parents needed him to earn money early, so Li Long decided to put this dream aside and enrolled in the Faculty of Science at Tsinghua University (China).

After graduating from college in 2012, Li became a full-time tutor at tutoring centers. He said that before the summer of 2021, when the Chinese government had not yet cracked down on tutoring, the job provided him with a high income. Thanks to that, he was able to buy three apartments in Beijing and Harbin.

However, Li shared that he never stopped dreaming of studying medicine, especially after seeing some of his students get accepted into medical universities.

"I really envy them," he said.

Earlier this year, Li started reviewing for his college entrance exams, making his dream come true.

"Many people think that at the age of 35, there will be no big changes. But I know I can start a new life," Li said, confident that he can score at least 650/750 points in this year's exam.

Li’s story was picked up by the media and has been viewed 120 million times on Weibo, with some suggesting he was just trying to “go viral” on social media. Others have criticized Li for wasting resources and taking away opportunities from younger candidates or those who have never taken the college entrance exam.

"Time will tell. No one spends years studying medicine just to attract attention online," Li Long replied.

However, Li also shared that after the discussions on social networks, he also wondered whether he was depriving young people of opportunities when the admission quota was limited. In addition, he also considered that if he graduated at the age of 40, he might have difficulty finding a job.

"I'm trying to find a better solution to fulfill my dream without affecting others. Even if I make a wrong decision, I won't lose too much. But continuing to earn money for the next 10 years with the old job won't make me happy," he shared.
