Viettel The Cong says goodbye to coach Nguyen Duc Thang

On the evening of April 26, The Cong Viettel and coach Nguyen Duc Thang parted ways after more than 1 year together.

Coach Nguyen Duc Thang was the one who took the initiative to resign and was approved by the leadership of The Cong Viettel Club. The decision was made quickly, just 1 day after the victory over SLNA in round 20 of V.League 2024/25.

This is a big surprise for Vietnamese football because coach Nguyen Duc Thang has just helped The Cong Viettel break a 3-match winless streak and return to the top 3 of V.League this season. Mr. Thang's team currently has 33 points, 6 points behind the top team Nam Dinh , with 6 rounds left in the tournament.

Not only still having a chance to win the V.League, The Cong Viettel is still fighting in the National Cup, where they meet Cong An Ha Noi in the semi-finals.

Coach Nguyen Duc Thang, born in 1976, is a former star of The Cong and the Vietnamese national team. Before leading The Cong Viettel in early 2024, he helped Saigon win the 2015 First Division championship and helped Binh Dinh compete for the 2022 V.League championship.

Viettel The Cong is likely to announce a new coach tomorrow. The identity of the new captain of the army team is rumored to be Velizar Popov, who just left Thanh Hoa Club in the middle of the season.

Speaking with Tri Thuc - ZNews on the evening of April 26, Coach Popov said: "I can't say anything until tomorrow."
