Vietnamese sports determined to achieve the goal of 'hunting for more tickets' to the 2024 Paris Olympics

This April and May are the decisive times in the race for tickets to the 2024 Olympics in Paris (France) of Vietnamese sports (TTVN) with at least 16 important competitions in 11 sports.

As of April 7, only 6 Vietnamese athletes have qualified for the 2024 Olympics while the qualifying rounds are still ongoing. The latest case to "miss" the 2024 Olympics ticket is Nguyen Huy Hoang.

On April 6, the swimmer from Quang Binh won a gold medal and broke the record of the 2024 age group swimming championship in Thailand with a time of 15 minutes 37 seconds 29 in the men's 1,500m freestyle. However, this achievement is still not enough for Nguyen Huy Hoang to get a ticket to the 2024 Olympics as he is still far from the A standard of 15 minutes 00 seconds 99 or the B standard of 15 minutes 05 seconds 49.

Previously, on April 2, weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh was the latest person to bring home a ticket to the 2024 Olympics in weightlifting for Vietnam when he competed successfully at the World Cup held in Phuket, Thailand. Thanks to improving his total lift compared to his recent best performance, from 292 kg to 294 kg, the weightlifter from Bac Ninh was officially on the list of 10 athletes awarded tickets to the 2024 Olympics in the men's 61 kg category. Trinh Van Vinh is also the only Vietnamese weightlifter to have a ticket to the Olympics to date.

Statistics show that Vietnam has 6 athletes who have qualified for the Olympics, including Nguyen Thi That (cycling, mass start), Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming, 800m freestyle), Trinh Thu Vinh (shooting, 10m air pistol), Le Thi Mong Tuyen (shooting, 10m air rifle), Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing, 54kg category) and Trinh Van Vinh (weightlifting, 61kg category). Compared to the target of winning 12 to 15 official tickets, Vietnam has only completed 50% of the minimum target in the context of the race for tickets in the 2024 Olympic program entering the final stage.

TTVN enters the peak period of the Olympic ticket hunting campaign in April and May with participation in at least 16 selection or qualifying competitions in 11 sports at the continental and world levels. Of these, 7 sports including table tennis, fencing, archery, rowing, canoeing, shooting and athletics are all competitions that determine the possibility of winning tickets if successful or going empty-handed if unsuccessful. In terms of expertise, TTVN athletes in this group of sports all have the opportunity to compete, but the final result is the deciding factor.

Looking at the number of tournaments in April and May, if everything goes smoothly and the athletes achieve good results, Vietnam can win at least 6 more Olympic tickets. The sports with the most opportunities are table tennis, rowing, archery, shooting, judo and wrestling.

With 65 athletes in 14 sports receiving key investment to prepare for the 2024 Olympic qualifiers, the opportunity for Vietnam to complete the minimum target of winning 12 tickets to the 2024 Olympics is well-founded. However, the most important thing is the ability to maximize the performance and competitive spirit of each athlete in the upcoming decisive competitions.
