The U.S. government filed a lawsuit against Google in January along with eight states, arguing that the company had illegally abused its dominance of online advertising. Google has denied any wrongdoing and asked Judge Leonie Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia to dismiss the case.
The Justice Department’s lawsuit follows a separate lawsuit filed in 2020, late in the Trump administration, accusing Google of violating antitrust laws to maintain its dominance in search. That case is set to go to trial this September.
The Biden administration has sought to strengthen antitrust enforcement. In addition to the Google lawsuit, the U.S. government is also reviewing several proposed mergers.
