Tallinn Old Town in the capital Tallinn, located right on the Baltic coast, was formed in the 11th century, but it was not until the 13th century when the city became a member of the Hanseatic League - a powerful trade alliance of coastal city-states in Northern Europe, that Tallinn really developed.

The Old Quarter covers an area of 113 hectares and a buffer zone of 2,253 hectares; recognized as a world heritage site by the United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 1997.
