Love and cherish family more through "Mom doesn't have dreams"

Author Ha Mer of the book “Mom has no dream” (Literature Publishing House, 2025) asked her mother about her dream and realized that she had no wishes for herself, but all her wishes were for her children and family. That story is probably not unique to anyone, because most mothers are like that! And Ha Mer leads readers back to their childhood memories, accompanying the present to understand and love their parents more, cherish family affection...

The book has more than 60 articles which are essays and short stories, arranged like an autobiography of the author. The journey of experiencing hardships, difficulties and growing up of the main character called “It” helps readers understand the living conditions, thoughts and personality of the character from childhood to adulthood. Among them, the most influential people are the parents.

“It”s house is in a poor village, parents work hard all year round but still do not have enough to eat, lacking in all aspects, to the point that when he was little “It” used to ask “Why is our family so poor, Mom?”. Although poor, the love of parents for their children is always full. That is also the motivation, the consolation for the children to strive to study and work later. Each small story about family meals, about dishes, childhood games in the countryside, or rainy and stormy days… are like catalysts that fill the author’s memories with emotions.

In that memory, the mother’s thin figure and immense motherly love are always the highlights of the stories. “It” gradually realizes that the mother has no dreams of her own, because the mother always wishes for the best for her children. A series of stories such as: “Mom doesn’t know how to read”, “Mom isn’t cold”, “What color are mom’s tears”, “Why do you guys stay small forever?”… more clearly depict the image and silent sacrifice of the mother, making us appreciate the sacred motherly love even more.

Meanwhile, in the eyes of “It”, the image of the father when he was young, although hard-working, was quiet and did not care much about others. Sometimes, even the parents quarreled and argued, causing the house to be restless. When he was young, “It” did not love his father as much as his mother, but when he grew up, traveled a lot, and experienced a lot, “It” understood and loved his father more. He tried to influence his father to give up bad habits, so that his father could live a healthier life.

Through each small story, each real experience, the author shows readers that: although parents are sometimes not perfect, but with their children, they always give their full love. Children living in that loving embrace often do not pay attention and think it is normal. Only when they go far away from home, when they are born, and encounter many things, do they understand and appreciate the moments with their family, because that is not only where there is love, but also where we feel warmth and peace. Especially, only when members know how to think for each other, understand and share, will the bond of a family be sustainable.

Two-thirds of the work is about feelings for parents and family, the rest the author writes about relatives, friends, neighbors, colleagues, street vendors... From unfortunate lives, to rising up to stories of kindness... giving readers more meaningful lessons on being human.
