At the ceremony, author Nguyen Thanh Phong shared that the reason for writing this book came from his own concerns about the development of Ho Chi Minh City after a long time of being attached to the city. Especially when Ho Chi Minh City was newly formed from three localities, becoming a megacity, it urged him to write down his concerns. When the book reached the publisher's editor, it was already the 6th draft.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, the biggest obstacle in writing the book was not the problem of materials, but how to reconcile theory with the very vivid experience and practice of Ho Chi Minh City.
Commenting on the book, journalist To Dinh Tuan, Editor-in-Chief of Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, said that the book is very valuable, being released at the right time when Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to hold the first Party Congress after the formation of the new city. “I see in the book the spirit and responsibility of a citizen; scientific thinking and vivid practice; an open perspective, ready to accept new things, and a lot of practical data,” said journalist To Dinh Tuan.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien, Editor of Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House, also expressed her impression of the coherence and logic of the book. Although it is an academic work, at the end of each chapter there is a transition to connect to the next chapter. The book contains a huge amount of knowledge, demonstrating the understanding and dedication of the writer.
The author has special faith in today’s young generation – those who grew up in the digital age, have access to global knowledge, are not afraid of change, are flexible and ambitious. “I hope that you will not only study well and work well, but also debate and present ideas, not only be policy beneficiaries but also participate in co-creating policies,” he said.
The book is nearly 500 pages thick, consisting of 4 main parts: Part 1 is the new vision for the new Ho Chi Minh City; Part 2 explores international megacity models and lessons for Ho Chi Minh City; Part 3 analyzes the pillars of megacity construction: That is the multipolar model; modern infrastructure - smart connection - digital logistics; financial center - high-tech industry - innovation; creative culture and global lifestyle; green city - circular economy - sustainable development; The final part discusses smart management and governance architecture for megacities.
