Located in the pine forest next to Dai Lai Lake (now in Phu Tho province), Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum is storing about 130 works from 17 countries. Many large-scale sculptures are placed outdoors, and a series of art paintings are displayed in the exhibition house that are shaped or recycled from old shipping containers.

Not only does this museum offer beautiful works, it is also highly appreciated by experts, bringing new milestones to Vietnamese contemporary art.

Solution to difficult problem

On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Flamingo Museum of Contemporary Art and the 10th anniversary of the Art In the Forest project (the museum's predecessor), researchers and artists had the opportunity to look back and evaluate the role of these projects.

Artist, researcher and art critic Nguyen Quan commented that Art in the Forest has been solving a common problem in advanced countries around the world as well as developing countries: The harmony between economy , culture and artistic creation.

“That is a difficult problem. I agree with the comment of Mr. Chu Kien Quoc (Kwok Kian Chow) - former director of the Singapore Art Museum. Five years ago, he rated the Flamingo Museum as one of the best art spaces in Southeast Asia that he knew,” said the researcher.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quan, Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum is also shaping its position and stature through the quality of its collections and displays. It is a process that combines new creations and creates new heritages, requiring cultural qualifications and enthusiasm to do so.

Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, Mr. Luong Xuan Doan, commented that currently, most investments in the art system are only "modest and generous." Businesses mainly exploit economic benefits, but Flamingo Group is proactive and confident in investing a large amount in art.

“This is a very special success and a model for other corporations to be encouraged. It is necessary to have such investors for the arts to develop, instead of relying on State investment,” Mr. Doan commented.

The Chairman of the Fine Arts Association believes that the Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum possesses valuable artistic materials: 130 works are representatives of innovation in Vietnamese contemporary art, especially with the participation of both domestic and international artists.

Art in harmony with nature

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Forest Art project, eight new large-scale sculptures have been added to the museum’s collection. The series continues the criteria of harmony with the natural space of the forest.

Along the paths are a series of works with diverse expressions, but shared a positive and benevolent spirit.

One example is the human-tree sculpture called “Don't worry” , with one hand making the OK sign, the other hand open to receive photographers.

“From the forests, green trees and fresh air around Dai Lai Lake, I imagined my work as a companion of the pine trees here,” author Pham Dinh Tien shared.

Inspired by a friend who often wears flip-flops and lives with the attitude that "Everything will be fine", Pham Dinh Tien shares the message: "In life, sometimes we cannot grasp all of nature. Sometimes we need the god of luck to feel secure in life."

Or like the work "Portrait of Emptiness (Contemporary Buddha)", author Nguyen Tran Uu Dam also creates many interesting visual effects.

Inspired by Buddhist philosophy and observations and contemplations through a ceramic vase, Nguyen Tran Uu Dam chose to cut the vase in half to show the viewer its emptiness, added a pedestal to create a person sitting cross-legged in the lotus position, and then cut many vertical layers.

“When viewed from the front, the statue becomes ‘transparent,’ seemingly disappearing, becoming one with the surrounding environment,” the author describes. Through this, he conveys the artist’s message that: Being happy and at peace with oneself is also being happy and at peace with the world around.

In addition to Vietnamese authors, visitors to the Flamingo Museum of Contemporary Art can admire paintings and sculptures by authors from Japan, Korea, Singapore, the US, Canada, France, Spain...

Located in the semi-public space of Flamingo Dai Lai resort, Flamingo Contemporary Art Museum is open to visitors as well as guests staying at the resort.

Currently, the museum is organizing many tours for many groups of people such as students.

“When I think about these things, in relation to the country's art scene in the past and present, I cannot help but feel excited when thinking about a not-so-distant future where there will be a generation accustomed to looking at, playing with and growing up in the presence of contemporary sculptures," curator Linh Le of the art space Á Space shared.

"And maybe in the future there will be a technical drawing called Art in the Forest, there will gradually be more space and opportunities for contemporary sculpture to be present in Vietnamese public life" - she added.
