Every year, phone makers use the same tactic: pretending not to copy each other when releasing phones with similar designs. However, it seems that Samsung and Apple have decided to go completely different ways.

The recently launched iPhone 17 series features a sturdy chassis, while leaks suggest that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S26 series will focus on a thinner and lighter design. If true, this could be a sign that the two phone industry giants are taking different design directions.
According to leaked specifications, the Galaxy S26 is expected to weigh 164 grams and be 6.9 mm thick, lighter and thinner than the iPhone 17, which weighs 177 grams and is 7.95 mm thick. Similarly, the Galaxy S26 Plus weighs 191 grams and is 7.3 mm thick, while the iPhone 17 Plus weighs 204 grams and is 8.75 mm thick.
Notably, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is said to weigh 214 grams and be 7.9 mm thick, compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max which weighs 231 grams and is 8.75 mm thick. If true, Samsung is aiming to launch thinner and lighter phones across all segments, almost directly targeting Apple's design.

Samsung pursues thinness and lightness, Apple maintains its identity
The design differences between the iPhone and Galaxy are a positive sign. With so many phones now looking the same, having a unique style helps consumers differentiate. Of course, there are still companies that choose to go their own way, like the Honor 500, which looks like a cross between the iPhone 17 and the Pixel 10, blending good design together.
Apple is also joining the thin and light race with the new iPhone Air, but it is struggling in the market. Similarly, the super-thin Galaxy S25 Edge has not achieved the expected sales. This shows that while thin and light designs are attractive, battery life is still an important factor that consumers care about.

If Samsung continues to pursue a thin and light design with the Galaxy S26 series, the question is whether they will cut down on battery capacity. Meanwhile, Apple may continue to keep the thicker design to ensure better battery life for users.
Ultimately, what consumers want is phones that are not only beautiful but also functional. The competition between Samsung and Apple will push both companies to experiment with new designs, giving consumers more options in the future.
