Teachers for flood victims

Amidst the historic flood in eastern Dak Lak, teachers from Nguyen Van Linh High School (Hoa Hiep Ward, Dong Hoa Town) cooked rice to provide supplies when the water rose and braved the rain to bring rice and warm clothes to each house after the flood receded.

During the historic flood that swept through the eastern communes and wards of Dak Lak province, there were teachers from Nguyen Van Linh High School, Hoa Hiep Ward (Dong Hoa Town, former Phu Yen ) who worked hard to cook rice and provide supplies for people isolated in the flood area. When the water receded, they went back and forth, braving the rain to bring rice and warm clothes to the people. They did it with all their hearts, hoping that their hometown people would overcome their difficulties.

The days that schools let students off due to flooding also fell on Vietnam Teachers’ Day, November 20. Teachers should have received well wishes from students and friends, but they put aside that joy and rushed into the “battle” with people in the flooded areas.

During the days when the flood was rising, teachers of Nguyen Van Linh High School used their own money to buy rice and food to cook for people isolated in the flood area.

“I didn’t think about November 20th at all, but in my heart I felt anxious, sad and extremely sympathetic towards the people in the flooded areas. My house was not flooded so I did what I could for them, even if it meant getting soaked in the cold rain. Thinking about the people sitting cold and hungry on the roof gave me more motivation to help them,” Kim Tho shared.

After the flood receded, teachers from Nguyen Van Linh High School used motorbikes and waded through mud to transport gifts to remote villages that had been isolated for many days, such as Thach Tuan 1, Thach Tuan 2, and Nui Hiem in Hoa Xuan Commune. At that time, these residential areas had not yet been reached by relief teams.

“It was hard work, but I felt very happy when looking into the eyes of the mothers, the elderly, and the children receiving gifts of rice, cash, cakes, milk, etc. In their eyes, I felt the respect that grandparents often say 'a piece of food when hungry is worth a package when full'. Standing on the podium, I was happy to impart knowledge to my students, and when I came to the people in the flooded areas, I felt the love of my compatriots, my homeland, and my neighbors," Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Vice Principal of Nguyen Van Linh High School, choked up as she shared.

Although the lives of teachers at Nguyen Van Linh High School are still difficult, for them, sharing and contributing their small efforts to help people overcome hardships is a source of happiness.
