
Comrade Tran Duc Luong, former member of the Politburo, former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, former Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council, was born on May 5, 1937; hometown: Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho district (now Duc Pho town), Quang Ngai province; permanent residence: No. 298, Van Phuc street, Lieu Giai ward, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi city. He participated in the revolution from February 1955; joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 19, 1959; member of the Party Central Committee of the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th terms; member of the Politburo of the 8th and 9th terms; member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the 8th term; Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers from February 1987 to September 1992; Deputy Prime Minister from October 1992 to August 1997; President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council, 10th and 11th tenures; National Assembly deputy, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th tenures.
After a period of serious illness, despite the Party, State, professors, doctors and nurses' devoted treatment and the wholehearted care of his family, due to old age and serious illness, he passed away at 10:51 p.m. on May 20, 2025 (April 23, At Ty year), at his home, at the age of 88.
During more than 50 years of revolutionary activities, Comrade has made many great contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. He was awarded the Gold Star Order, 65-year Party membership badge and many other noble orders, medals, awards and titles by the Party and the State.
Comrade's passing is a great loss to our Party, State, People and Comrade's family. To express condolences and commemorate Comrade Tran Duc Luong, the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front decided to hold a State Funeral for Comrade.

The funeral of comrade Tran Duc Luong was held according to the State Funeral ceremony.
Comrade Tran Duc Luong's coffin was laid to rest at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi .
The funeral of comrade Tran Duc Luong will be held at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi, starting from 7:00 a.m. on May 24, 2025 to 7:00 a.m. on May 25, 2025.
The memorial service for comrade Tran Duc Luong was solemnly held at 7:00 a.m. on May 25, 2025 at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi. The burial ceremony was held at 3:00 p.m. the same day at the hometown cemetery, Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho town, Quang Ngai province.
At the same time, at Thong Nhat Hall, Ho Chi Minh City and at Hall T50, Quang Ngai Provincial Military Command, No. 142 Le Trung Dinh, Quang Ngai City, the Funeral and Memorial Service for Comrade Tran Duc Luong also took place.
Vietnam Television and Voice of Vietnam will broadcast live the funeral, memorial service and burial ceremony of comrade Tran Duc Luong in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ngai province.
During the two days of the State Funeral of Comrade Tran Duc Luong, former Politburo member and former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (May 24 and 25, 2025), agencies, offices, and public places will fly flags at half-mast and no entertainment activities will be organized.

October 1955 to August 1959: He worked as a technical staff in geological exploration groups and teams; studied intermediate geology for 8 months.

August 1997 to November 2007: He was President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council (September 1997); Member of the Politburo Standing Committee (January 1998). At the 9th National Congress of the Party, he continued to be elected to the Party Central Committee, and was elected by the Party Central Committee to the Politburo (April 2001).
