Ahead of the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship taking place at 8pm on July 29, goalkeeper Ardiansyah said he was not afraid if he had to face a nerve-wracking penalty shootout. However, he still prioritized winning in the official match time.
"We are very ready for the final. If it goes to penalties, the chances will be 50-50. But we have to try to win within 90 minutes," Ardiansyah told CNN Indonesia.
Indonesia U23 reached the final after a dramatic 7-6 win over Thailand U23 on penalties, after the two teams drew 1-1 in regulation time. Ardiansyah was the hero for the Indonesian team when he successfully blocked a penalty kick from the opponent.
Despite being the hero in the nerve-wracking shootout, Ardiansyah still hopes to avoid a repeat of the scenario against coach Kim Sang Sik's team. He believes that having to take penalties will reduce his team's chances of winning.
Regarding the upcoming opponent, the goalkeeper currently playing for PSM Makassar admitted that he does not have much information about the U23 Vietnam team's attack.
The final match between U23 Indonesia and U23 Vietnam promises to be very exciting. This is an opportunity for U23 Indonesia to "pay back the debt" they owed two years ago, when they lost to U23 Vietnam in the same final match after a penalty shootout.
Meanwhile, coach Kim Sang Sik and his team are aiming to become the first team to win this tournament three times in a row.
The match will be played under the supervision of VAR technology, the first time it has been applied to a U23 level match in Southeast Asia, to ensure fairness and accuracy for the championship match.
