Ms. Le Thi Dung's spring roll wrapper production facility in Binh village, Thach Hung commune, has been operating since the 4th day of Tet (Lunar New Year).
Starting on the morning of the 4th day of the Lunar New Year, the spring roll wrapper production facility of Ms. Le Thi Dung (Binh village, Thach Hung commune) began its new production season. On average, the facility produces about 350 kg of rice per day. In addition to family members, 5 workers also begin their busy workdays from 5 am to 6 pm each day.
Ms. Le Thi Dung shared: “Both before and after Tet (Lunar New Year) are peak times for spring roll wrapper production. This year, from the second day of Tet, many distributors called to place orders, so we started production early. Having orders and busy work at the beginning of the year is a source of happiness for us. The busy spring roll wrapper production season lasts until the end of February (lunar calendar).”
It's not just Ms. Dung's family; at this time, many families in Binh village, Thach Hung commune (Ha Tinh City), the "capital" of spring roll wrapper production, have started their 2024 production season.
Workers at Ms. Dang Thi Minh's spring roll wrapper production facility (Binh village, Thach Hung commune) are busy removing wrappers from the packaging.
Ms. Dang Thi Minh (Binh village, Thach Hung commune) shared: “I started lighting the rice paper making oven on the morning of the 8th day of Tet (Lunar New Year). On average, my family produces 160 kg of rice per day, yielding over 20,000 rice paper sheets. Before Tet, the price was about 20,000 VND per pack, after Tet it's 16,000 - 18,000 VND per pack. At this price, my family earns an average of 3-4 million VND per day, and after deducting expenses, the profit is 800,000 - 1 million VND per day.”
Making spring roll wrappers is a traditional craft of the people in Binh village. This is the first locality in Ha Tinh province to be recognized by the province and have a plan issued for the preservation and development of the traditional spring roll wrapper making craft. From Binh village, now other villages in Thach Hung commune (Ha Tinh city) also have households participating in spring roll wrapper production.
Thach Hung spring roll wrappers are labeled and packaged according to food safety and hygiene standards.
According to statistics, Thach Hung commune (Ha Tinh City) currently has more than 120 households producing spring roll wrappers; of which Binh village accounts for more than 90 households. Previously, households produced them manually, but in the last decade or so, people have switched to making wrappers using machines, thereby increasing productivity and producing more uniform wrappers. The spring roll wrapper making industry in Thach Hung commune is providing employment for more than 200 local workers. Revenue from spring roll wrapper production in the entire commune reaches more than 31 billion VND/year.
Ms. Pham Thi Ha, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thach Hung commune, said: “In recent years, the production of spring roll wrappers has created jobs and brought relatively high income to local people. In the future, implementing the plan to preserve and develop the craft village recognized by Ha Tinh province, we will reorganize the traditional craft village towards forming value chains from raw material areas, production, to product consumption. In addition, the locality will develop a plan to promote trade, develop raw material areas, build brands, and establish geographical indications to create products and industries with high competitiveness in the market; focusing on building processes to ensure food safety and hygiene, environmental hygiene; and moving towards building OCOP products for the locality.”
Making spring roll wrappers is a traditional family craft of the people in Thach Hung commune.
By starting the 2024 production season early, the spring roll wrapper makers of Thach Hung commune (Ha Tinh City) are hoping for a successful year, taking the craft village further along with the socio -economic development of the locality; while preserving the traditional flavors of their homeland.
