Prime Minister proposes leading Japanese and world banks to join International Financial Center in Vietnam

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the afternoon of August 6, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Mr. Hironori Kamezawa, General Director of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) of Japan.

MUFG (2006) is one of the world's largest global financial groups and one of Japan's three "big banks" (alongside SMBC and Mizuho) with more than 772 branches in Japan and 76 branches worldwide. In 2020, MUFG's revenue reached 46 billion USD, profit reached 2.7 billion USD.

MUFG Bank has been operating in Vietnam since 1998. In 2013, MUFG and Vietinbank officially began strategic cooperation activities with MUFG purchasing 19.73% of VietinBank's shares. This was the largest M&A investment deal in the history of Vietnam's banking industry at that time.

At the meeting, MUFG General Director reported on the strategic cooperation between MUFG and VietinBank and MUFG's future operational orientation.

Mr. Hironori Kamezawa said that since becoming a strategic partner with VietinBank, thanks to the support of the Prime Minister and relevant ministries and branches, the cooperative relationship between the two sides has continuously developed, contributing to improving the bank's management capacity and stable growth.

Assessing Vietnam as one of the most attractive investment destinations in the region, increasingly important to Japanese enterprises, MUFG wishes to contribute to the development of the banking industry, the economy of Vietnam and cooperation between Vietnam and Japan; continue to promote the role of a bridge between the business community and management agencies in Vietnam; continue to support Vietnam in developing an international financial center because this is an important step for Vietnam and also a strong field of the group; actively support start-ups and innovative initiatives in the agricultural - food sector towards sustainability, promoting the responsibility of enterprises towards the environment and society; cooperate in green transformation of the banking - financial sector.

Emphasizing that the Vietnam-Japan relationship is very good and that Vietnam needs to continue to consult and learn from Japan's development experience, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated MUFG's effective investment and business activities in Vietnam, especially the results of strategic cooperation with VietinBank over the past 10 years.

The Prime Minister highly appreciated MUFG - Vietinbank for coordinating with the Ministry of Finance to successfully organize 6 dialogue sessions between the Prime Minister of Vietnam and large Japanese corporations to listen to and promptly and effectively resolve proposals and recommendations, strengthening the confidence of Japanese investors.

The Prime Minister welcomed the group's investment and business plans in the coming time, especially initiatives to support Vietnam in achieving its goal of zero net emissions by 2050, developing a startup ecosystem, and digital transformation in the banking sector...

In the spirit of harmonious benefits and shared risks, the Prime Minister suggested that, as a leading prestigious bank in the Japanese business community, MUFG Bank continue to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam, contributing to promoting the Vietnam-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The Vietnamese Government continues to create favorable conditions for Japanese banks to cooperate and invest in Vietnam, which is a smart and correct investment orientation.

The Prime Minister suggested that MUFG continue to discuss with the Ministry of Finance to enhance cooperation, perfect the legal framework, deploy the construction and operation of international financial centers in Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Along with that, share development experiences, contribute to policy making; promote cooperation in developing digital economy, green economy, circular economy, emerging fields; develop capital markets, promote green finance and carbon credit mechanisms, access to capital within the framework of the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC); promote innovation, support start-ups; organize conferences on investment and development in Vietnam to mobilize resources, support Vietnamese enterprises to connect with foreign partners.
