On the afternoon of May 23, Nguyen Thuy Linh ( world rank 26) could not make a surprise against Chinese tennis player Wang Zhiyi in the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open 2025.
Wang Zhiyi - the tournament's number 1 seed and currently ranked 2nd in the world - proved to be far superior to the Vietnamese representative. And the match ended with a 2-0 victory (21-11 and 21-15) for Wang Zhiyi.
In the first set, Thuy Linh was somewhat overwhelmed by the pressure from her opponent as she continuously made mistakes. The Chinese player showed her superiority by moving appropriately, controlling the shuttlecock and imposing a one-sided game. The first set ended with a clear victory for Wang Zhiyi.
Vietnam's No. 1 tennis player played better in the second set when she had many difficult shots that left her opponent helpless. It was easy to see that Nguyen Thuy Linh was much more confident in each of her shots.
However, the difference in class helped Wang Zhiyi regain important points, and ended game 2 with a score of 21-15.
Although stopping at the quarter-finals, Thuy Linh still managed to accumulate a significant number of points. This helped her improve her position on the world rankings.
The Dong Nai tennis player had a quite successful tournament when she reached the quarterfinals. In the previous round, she also defeated her Danish opponent Line Christophersen in a dramatic match with a score of 2-1 (20-22, 21-11 and 21-18).
She also impressed when she defeated former world number 2 Pusarla Venkata Sindhu in the opening match of the 2025 Malaysia Open.
