In the future, primary energy sources will not be able to meet the energy consumption needs of the economy , Vietnam will have to import primary energy. Therefore, implementing activities to use energy economically and efficiently is an important solution to reduce the pressure on energy demand and ensure national energy security.

Surveys by the National Program on Energy Saving and Efficiency for the 2019-2030 period show that the potential for energy saving in industry in Vietnam can reach 20%-30% (illustrative photo). |
On November 15, the Management Board of Technical Assistance Projects in the field of energy conservation, Ministry of Industry and Trade, in coordination with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) held a workshop to launch the project "Promoting energy conservation activities in large enterprises through energy management systems and optimizing energy conservation systems and practices in small and medium enterprises in Vietnam" (IEEP project).
The IEEP project is a component of the Vietnam-EU Sustainable Energy Transition (SEPT) programme funded by the European Union (EU), implemented by UNIDO and the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development (DEED), Ministry of Industry and Trade for a period of 5 years (from 2023 to 2027).
The representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that the development and implementation of the IEEP Project demonstrates the efforts of the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the technical support of UNIDO to complete regulations and guidelines on energy management systems according to ISO 50001 and optimize major energy-using systems as well as strengthen technical and financial human resources to promote the widespread application of energy management systems and system optimization in Vietnamese industrial enterprises.
The overall objective of the project is to promote increased market demand and application of energy-saving solutions in industry to achieve better energy use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce carbon emissions as well as improve productivity and competitiveness of Vietnamese industries.
The IEEP project consists of three main components: Strengthening institutional and policy frameworks; implementing capacity building and enhancement programs; implementing projects on energy management systems and system optimization, focusing on 10 target industries including: pulp and paper, food processing, seafood processing, textiles, chemicals and fertilizer production, rubber processing, metallurgy and steel, cement, plastics and beverages. |
Mr. Phuong Hoang Kim, Director of the Project Management Board, Director of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development, Ministry of Industry and Trade said: “The IEEP project plays an important role in supporting the Ministry of Industry and Trade in implementing activities to achieve the goals of the National Program on energy efficiency and conservation, especially in the period of 2019-2025 with the goal of saving 5-7% of total energy consumption nationwide”.
Ms. Kristina Bünde, Head of Cooperation, Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam shared: “Sustainable energy transition is one of the EU’s priorities globally as well as in Vietnam to promote green and sustainable development. We hope that the IEEP Project - a component of SETP - will help the National Program on Energy Efficiency and Conservation achieve its set goals, as well as contribute to supporting Vietnam in implementing its commitments on sustainable energy transition and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050”.
The IEEP project kick-off workshop brought together 130 delegates from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, EU, UNIDO, state agencies, foreign organizations in Vietnam, banks, financial institutions, associations, consulting companies and companies providing energy-saving services and equipment, companies, certification organizations, industrial enterprises, universities, research institutes, and non -governmental organizations in Vietnam.
The workshop was organized with the aim of introducing the IEEP Project in general (objectives, expected results, main components/activities and implementation timeline, implementation organization...) to project partners, consulting units, international partners and organizations, and enterprises in order to attract attention and support, creating favorable conditions for project implementation.
