US Senate passes resolution to end Trump's global tariffs

The US Senate on October 30 passed a bipartisan resolution to repeal President Donald Trump's global tariffs, including high duties on longtime allies such as the European Union, Japan and South Korea.

A similar proposal failed in the Senate in late April by a 50-49 vote, after Vice President Vance cast the deciding vote to reject it.

Four Republican senators voted with the Democrats on October 30: Rand Paul (Kentucky) - the resolution's sponsor, Mitch McConnell (Kentucky), Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska).

The resolution declares an end to the national emergency that Mr. Trump invoked on April 2, dubbed “Liberation Day,” to authorize the imposition of a series of retaliatory tariffs globally.

Although seen as a symbolic victory for critics of Mr. Trump's trade policies, the resolution is unlikely to have practical effect because House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is almost certain not to bring it to a vote, and Mr. Trump would veto it if it passed.

Earlier this week, the Senate also voted to end 35% tariffs on Canada and 50% on Brazil, but these bills are also unlikely to pass the House./.
