Bill Gates said "the biggest mistake of all time was my poor management, which prevented Microsoft from becoming Android as it is today". He said this shortcoming allowed Google to develop the Android operating system, which now dominates the mobile market thanks to its flexibility and high customizability.
Bill Gates says his poor management cost Microsoft the opportunity to dominate the mobile operating system market
The billionaire stressed that developing a similar operating system was the “natural thing” for Microsoft to do to win. However, he admitted that poor management and antitrust issues prevented the company from seizing the opportunity. After Microsoft missed out, Google bought Android in 2005 and launched its first device in September 2008. Meanwhile, Apple launched the iPhone in 2007 and created a huge advantage in the mobile sector.
Android co-founder explains why he created Android
Rich Miner, co-founder of Android, also shared his views on Microsoft's failure. He said: "I actually helped create Android to prevent Microsoft from controlling phones like they did PCs, stifling innovation." Miner emphasized that Bill Gates needs to take more responsibility for the $400 billion loss that Microsoft has incurred.
Despite Microsoft’s missed opportunity in mobile, the company is still doing well and is among the three most valuable companies in the world , behind only Apple and NVIDIA. Last year, Microsoft temporarily held the crown with a market value of more than $3 trillion, thanks largely to early investments and the adoption of AI across its entire technology stack. Bill Gates said Microsoft continues to see significant success through products like Windows and Office.
