The whole city currently has 2,608 hectares of longan of all kinds, of which the most are Ido longan and Thanh longan. Ido longan is grown in many districts of O Mon, Thot Not, Phong Dien, Thoi Lai and Co Do. Thanh longan is mainly grown in Co Do district, with an area of about 330 hectares, concentrated in Thoi Hung commune and some neighboring areas of Dong Hiep and Dong Thang communes. Thanh longan grown in Co Do district has been purchased by enterprises for export to international markets, and is highly appreciated by international customers and consumers for its quality and deliciousness. Thanh longan trees often bear fruit according to natural seasons, Thanh longan fruit is quite large, thick flesh, small seeds, dry and sweet. Meanwhile, Ido longan grown in many places in the city is also highly appreciated by many small traders and fruit trading and exporting enterprises for its delicious quality, large fruit, beautiful skin, so there are many opportunities to expand the consumption market, especially for export. In particular, Ido is a type of longan that has the advantage of being able to produce fruit in different seasons as desired to have products all year round.
In recent times, Ido longan and longan fruit grown in Can Tho City have not only been purchased by many small traders and businesses in the Mekong Delta provinces and Ho Chi Minh City to serve domestic consumption but also exported to many countries around the world. Longan farmers are also interested in linking up to establish cooperatives and cooperative groups to grow longan in a safe direction, meeting VietGAP standards and being granted a Code for the growing area, meeting the requirements of traceability of origin. Thereby, creating favorable conditions for connecting and linking with businesses to develop production associated with processing, product consumption and expanding export markets. In recent years, many businesses (such as Vina T&T Import-Export Trading Service Company Limited (Vina T&T Group ), Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Group Joint Stock Company...) have participated in linking production and purchasing longan from farmers at many cooperatives in Can Tho City for export. Ido longan and Thanh longan from Can Tho have been successfully exported to many demanding markets such as: the United States, Australia and the EU.
Expanding consumer market
In addition to supporting farmers in production linkage, promoting the application of technical advances and standardizing production according to VietGAP according to standards and quality to meet market requirements, the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) and the functional agencies of Can Tho City also continue to pay attention to supporting farmers in promoting and consuming longan and other fruits. Pay attention to strengthening supply-demand connection activities, supporting farmers in cooperatives and cooperatives in connecting and linking with businesses to expand consumption markets, especially exports. According to Mr. Tran Thai Nghiem, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, organizing good production, with close and transparent linkage in the production and consumption process of products is the issue that the Department of Agriculture is focusing on implementing. The industry has paid attention to guiding and supporting farmers and businesses to strengthen chain linkage and comply with regulations, while focusing on promoting product consumption.
Vina T&T Group provides information and guidance to farmers on standards and quality of longan fruit exported to the US market.
In order to continue creating conditions for farmers, cooperatives and businesses to meet and connect in the production and consumption of longan and other fruits in general, recently at the Song Hau Farm Ecological Zone in Co Do district, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City coordinated with Vina T&T Group and related units to organize a workshop on "Strengthening the production and consumption chain of longan products meeting GAP standards". At the workshop, farmers were updated and provided with information on the import demand for longan of international markets and requirements on product standards and quality. The benefits of applying GAP production and solutions to effectively manage plant quarantine objects in longan gardens so that products are of quality, safe and meet export standards to international markets, especially demanding markets such as the United States and Australia. In particular, farmers in cooperatives have the opportunity to meet and exchange directly with export enterprises to strengthen the chain of links in order to proactively source goods to meet export needs. According to Mr. Nguyen Phong Phu, Technical Director of Vina T&T Group, the Company has participated in linking and purchasing fruits for farmers in cooperatives in Can Tho City for more than 6 years, with fruits such as: star apple, mango, durian, Ido longan and longan. Many types of fruit have been exported to demanding markets such as: the United States, Australia, Canada and the EU. The Company has a technical team to inspect and guide farmers in growing areas to ensure production and harvesting of products that meet export requirements.
Mr. Tran Phuoc Son, Director of Trang Ti Garden Cooperative, said: “Through meetings and strengthening links with export enterprises, farmers are not only updated with necessary information about the consumer market but also directly discuss with enterprises about purchasing needs and standards and quality that products need to achieve. From there, farmers produce to meet the requirements and orientation for export and proactively create large quantities of goods, ensuring quality and safety according to the orders of enterprises”. According to Mr. Son, thanks to participating in the chain with Vina T&T Group, last year more than 60 tons of longan from the cooperative were supplied to the company at a good price for export to the US and Australian markets. In 2025, the cooperative expects the amount of longan provided for export to reach several hundred tons. Currently, Trang Ti Garden Cooperative has signed a contract in principle with Vina T&T Group, according to which the company purchases all longan fruits that meet the size and export standards of the cooperative. For longan fruit that does not meet export size requirements, the cooperative plans to cooperate with units and businesses to supply and consume domestically. The cooperative currently has 20 members participating in growing longan fruit, with an area of over 80 hectares, of which 30 hectares meet VietGAP standards, 10 hectares are organic, and it is expected that 20 hectares will be produced according to Global GAP standards.
