On November 28, in Hanoi, the Truth National Political Publishing House coordinated with the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission to organize a national scientific conference on innovation and improvement of the quality of publishing, distribution, research and study of theoretical and political books.
According to many delegates, the quality of theoretical and political books has been significantly improved in recent times. Many important books serving Party building and propagating guidelines, policies and strategies have been carefully edited, ensuring political, scientific and practical values.
Publishing activities have shifted to a modern, multi-channel model, especially on digital platforms, helping theoretical books reach a wide range of people, especially the youth. Book research and study activities are increasingly systematic, linked to staff training and development.
However, there are still limitations: some publications are slow to innovate and lack appeal; the number of influential books is still small; publishing faces strong competition in cyberspace; research and study in some localities are still formal; pirated and counterfeit books have not been thoroughly handled.
Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution Nguyen Nguyen frankly stated that many theoretical books are being made in the old way, lacking summaries, open questions, and application situations, so knowledge has not become an effective learning tool. The delivery of books to the grassroots level is hindered, many stores leave books in storage without displaying them, causing the books to not reach the right audience.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Trong Lam, Director - Editor-in-Chief of the National Political Publishing House, said that making theoretical books is "dry, difficult and painful". However, with new thinking and ways of doing things, theoretical books have become closer to readers. He said that many political theory books, when ordered, only print 1,000 copies, but in reality, can publish up to 60,000 copies. That shows that if publishing "what the people need" instead of just doing "what we have", the industry will create more value. He informed that books with high theoretical content are the books that readers search for the most.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Vu Trong Lam, in the past, the industry hardly introduced books. Due to the lack of promotion, many good works were not known to readers and could not reach readers. Proof of this is the book Chung mot bong co (2010), 700 pages thick, seemingly difficult to read but still sold out.
Mr. Vu Trong Lam believes that the perception of making theoretical books has changed significantly. What is lacking now is not the market, but the dynamism in publishing. “The political theory book route is not a route that cannot be published; the problem is that readers are interested but we have not approached them properly.” Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Trong Lam affirms that electronic publishing is a strong direction, helping theoretical books reach more groups of readers, especially the young generation and remote areas.
Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Phan Xuan Thuy concluded that it is necessary to comprehensively innovate the content, form and method of publishing associated with digital transformation; train and foster cadres; strengthen coordination between agencies, schools and social organizations; expand international cooperation and bilingual publishing, in order to maximize the value of theoretical books, avoid "warehousing" and improve the effectiveness of propaganda and learning.
