According to TASS news agency, on January 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian held talks at the Kremlin and signed the long-awaited Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.
The agenda of the talks included global and regional issues of mutual concern, including developments in the Middle East, the situation in the South Caucasus and the situation surrounding Iran's nuclear program.
The bilateral agenda also includes ways to expand trade, investment, transport, logistics and humanitarian cooperation.
Before Mr. Pezeshkian's visit, international public opinion focused on the news that the two countries would sign a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.
On January 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that the treaty would not target any other country.
Meanwhile, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said that the comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement between the two countries will affect security cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in the Middle East.
"The agreement will certainly have an impact, because Iran is a strong and influential country in the region, and Russia is a great power. Therefore, it is natural that we and Moscow focus all our capabilities to maintain stability and security in the region," Jalali said.
According to him, the agreement consists of 47 articles and the preamble, including the clause on respect for territorial integrity, will be implemented to ensure balanced cooperation between the two countries. However, the agreement will not include a mutual defense clause like the treaties that Moscow signed with Pyongyang and Minsk because they are of a different nature.
"The country's independence, security and self-reliance are extremely important. We are not interested in joining any bloc," the Iranian ambassador stressed, adding that Iran will ensure its own security.
