US President Joe Biden on April 25 officially announced that he will run for re-election in 2024, calling on voters to give him more time to "finish the job" he started when he took the oath of office and put aside their concerns about the oldest president running the country for another four-year term, AP reported.

If re-elected, Mr. Biden will be 86 at the end of his second term. He is betting that his first-term legislative accomplishments and more than 50 years of experience in Washington will outweigh concerns about his age.

“Every generation has a moment when they must stand up for democracy. To stand up for their basic freedoms. I believe this is our moment,” Biden said on Twitter early on April 25. “That is why I am running for re-election as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s get the job done.”

The announcement, in a three-minute video , came on the fourth anniversary of Mr Biden first announcing his White House bid in 2019, promising to heal the “soul of the nation” during the turbulent tenure of his predecessor Donald Trump – a goal that has so far remained elusive.

The announcement ends with the “Biden Harris” logo, indicating that he will run for re-election alongside his “vice-chancellor” Kamala Harris, who appears heavily in the video.

However, Mr. Biden announced his re-election bid at a time when there was ample evidence that Americans wanted him to stop, the New York Post said.

According to the US newspaper, an April 23 NBC News poll showed that up to 70% of respondents do not want Mr. Biden to run again, while only 26% want him to do so. In February, an AP-NORC poll showed that only 12% of Democrats believe Mr. Biden should be the party's leader.

Despite plunging approval ratings and harsh attacks on his record, Mr. Biden appears to be on a path to winning his party's nomination with no serious Democratic challengers emerging.

Doctors also confirmed that the oldest president of the United States, who does not drink alcohol and exercises five times a week, is "fit to assume the duties of his office" after an examination in February.

Despite Mr. Biden’s numerous stumbles and gaffes, the White House insists the president’s record shows he is mentally sharp enough to handle the rigors of the job .
