He also announced the suspension of all aid and subsidies to Colombia, accusing the South American country of tolerating large-scale drug production.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, President Trump said he had spoken with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about Russian oil. He stated: “I spoke with Prime Minister Modi and he said he would not continue oil deals with Russia. But if they continue, India will have to pay a huge tax.”
The US President also announced that he would sharply increase tariffs on goods imported from Colombia and stop all payments, aid or subsidies to the country.
Earlier, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US military had destroyed a ship believed to be linked to Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) armed group.
Trump’s tough moves come as relations between Washington and Bogota have sunk to their lowest point in years. Last month, the US withdrew recognition of Colombia as a partner in the war on drugs and revoked the visa of President Gustavo Petro after he attended a pro-Palestinian rally in New York. In response, Colombia has stopped buying US weapons.
Colombia currently faces tariffs of around 10% on most of its exports to the US – the same level the Trump administration applies to many other countries – but Mr Trump has said he will “substantially increase” those tariffs, with details expected to be announced on October 21.
