Tan Kien Station will be one of three depots of the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line, expected to be operational from 2035. Meanwhile, the area around this station, 314 hectares wide, is also planned for TOD development in the 2026-2028 period.

According to plan, before 2035, the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line will officially come into operation, opening up great development opportunities for the western area of Ho Chi Minh City.

The 26-hectare land planned for Tan Kien station is abandoned and unattended.

In particular, Tan Kien station (Binh Chanh district) plays the role of one of the three main depots of the route, undertaking important operation and maintenance functions.

In particular, the area around Tan Kien station with an area of 314 hectares has been identified by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as one of 11 urban development locations according to the TOD model (public transport orientation) in the period 2024 - 2028.

This model not only effectively exploits traffic infrastructure but also creates the premise for forming a modern, multifunctional urban area with closely connected commercial, service, residential and public spaces.

Thus, if everything goes according to plan, in the next 10 years, the West of Ho Chi Minh City will form a new urban center with the role of a strategic traffic hub connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.

The combination of the railway and the TOD model promises to boost the economy , improve the quality of life and reshape the urban landscape of this area, creating momentum for sustainable development for the entire region.

According to records, the land area of more than 26 hectares planned for Tan Kien station is abandoned, overgrown with grass; becoming a place for garbage collection, livestock grazing, farming... and even being re-encroached.

There are still some households that have not been relocated.

Regarding the TOD development plan, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has assigned relevant agencies to develop a plan to determine detailed boundaries, land legal status and urban development functions in this area.

According to the plan, this work will be completed from the second to the third quarter of 2025. After that, the detailed planning will be adjusted from the second to the fourth quarter of 2025, before selecting an investor in 2026.

According to the HCM City Department of Transport, in the phased phase, the HCM City - Can Tho railway line will be built as a single track from An Binh Station ( Binh Duong ) to Can Tho Station (Can Tho City). The total length of the line is 175.2km, with a total estimated investment of about VND155,433 billion.

It is expected that in the next 10 years, the vacant land will become a developed urban area in the West of Ho Chi Minh City.

Of which, the low section has a length of 76.6km, accounting for 43.72%; the high section includes overpasses and river crossings with a length of 98.6km, accounting for 56.28%).

The route will have 12 stations and 4 future passenger stations, 3 depots (An Binh, Tan Kien, Can Tho), 4 vehicle maintenance and inspection stations, 3 infrastructure maintenance stations; 3 large river crossing locations (Saigon River, Dong Vam Co River, Tay Vam Co River) and 2 especially large river crossing locations (Tien River and Hau River).

In the completion phase, the standard is 1435mm gauge double track, electrified; total investment in phase 2 is about 64,736 billion VND.

The project's expected capacity is for passenger and cargo transport with an expected throughput capacity by 2055, with railway traffic volume on the route of about 26.148 million tons of cargo/year and 18.324 million passengers/year.

Regarding progress, it is expected to start construction of phase 1 before 2030, put into operation from 2035; deploy and put into operation phase 2 in 2055. Depending on the ability to arrange resources and solutions for implementation, the investment progress will be accelerated to shorten the progress.
