Over the past month, the price of green vegetables in Ho Chi Minh City has continuously increased, many types of leafy vegetables are priced from 10,000 - 15,000 VND/bunch such as water spinach and Chinese cabbage have jumped to 30,000 - 35,000 VND in traditional markets.

Faced with rising vegetable prices, consumers tend to go to supermarkets and order online to ensure quality and save costs, reducing spending pressure on daily meals.

Consumers go to supermarkets

According to reporters at some large supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, the supply of green vegetables is still abundant. Many types of green vegetables and fruits are sold at supermarkets at lower prices than traditional markets; items are clearly classified according to origin.

At Bach Hoa Xanh, Tang Nhon Phu A Ward (Thu Duc City), the supply of green vegetables is still adequate despite strong fluctuations in market prices. Vegetable shelves are constantly replenished, with a variety of goods such as cucumbers at VND38,000/kg, winged beans at VND75,000/kg, bitter melon at VND50,000/kg, carrots at VND35,000/kg, etc.

Some items are even cheaper than in the market by 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg, attracting a steady stream of customers throughout the day. Sales staff here said that additional vegetables are delivered every morning and afternoon from the main warehouse, helping to maintain stable prices and ensure freshness even during times of market scarcity.

Mr. Ba Duy - a resident of Tang Nhon Phu A ward said: "The price of vegetables in the market has increased quite a bit these days, but buying at Bach Hoa Xanh is still safe because the supply is stable, no need to worry about shortages. One thing I really like about Bach Hoa Xanh is that they still maintain the 'buy 1 get 1 free' program for many types of vegetables. This program has been around for a long time, not just today, helping me save a significant amount of money ."

Ms. Mai An - a resident of Binh Trung ward, who often shops at MM Mega Market Thao Dien, shared that the price of vegetables at the market is constantly increasing day by day: Malabar spinach or Chinese cabbage used to be only about 10,000 - 12,000 VND/bunch, now it has doubled or tripled. Meanwhile, in the supermarket, the price is only about 15,000 VND, the vegetables are fresh and safety controlled.

"I often order more vegetables online, especially on rainy days to save time going to the market, and also to be assured of the quality," said Ms. Mai An.

Similarly, Ms. Lan Huong (Tang Nhon Phu ward) said: "I switched to buying vegetables at the supermarket because the price is stable and the quality is guaranteed. Compared to the market, vegetables are less wilted and can be selected according to needs. When buying online, I can choose clean, pre-packaged vegetables, without having to spend time checking each bunch, which is both convenient and safe."

Ms. Ngoc Hoa - a sales staff at Saigon Co.op Mart shared that in fact, many essential vegetable products in the system are being sold at lower prices than traditional markets such as: white cabbage 9,900 VND/kg, hydroponic green lettuce 39,900 VND/kg, squash 29,900 VND/kg, cucumber 29,900 VND/kg... Currently, the supermarket is exploiting vegetable sources from areas less affected by weather, increasing imported output 3-4 times higher than usual and purchasing vegetables from local cooperatives.

Saigon Co.op is also implementing a large-scale price stabilization program with discounts of up to 30% on vegetables, meat, seafood and deep discounts on more than 1,000 products. The series of activities aims to help consumers reduce spending pressure and stabilize the market at the end of the year.

Ensuring supply and stabilizing prices

According to Mr. Tran Cong Hieu - Director of Co.opmart Vung Tau Supermarket, the high price of green vegetables at traditional markets is the result of prolonged stormy weather. Vegetable sources from seriously affected growing areas have caused the amount of goods delivered to supermarkets to decrease sharply, only 60 - 75% compared to the expected, especially for leafy vegetables and Da Lat vegetables.

However, Co.opmart Vung Tau has proactively worked with many suppliers to expand its supply sources, supplement alternative items and coordinate internally throughout the system, helping to reduce the pressure of supply shortages.

Even when the market supply is disrupted, Co.opmart Vung Tau still ensures adequate and quality goods. Many customers note that the prices at the supermarket's price stabilization points are reasonable, lower than the market and easy to access.

The ward authorities also appreciated the efforts of retail businesses, including Co.opmart Vung Tau, in joining hands to curb price increases and contribute to stabilizing the local market.

Mr. Tran Cong Hieu, Director of Co.opmart Vung Tau Supermarket, said that the unit has proactively applied many synchronous solutions to control the price of green vegetables: coordinating internal sources of goods, switching to selling vegetables to reduce costs, increasing on-site processing and cutting profit margins. Thanks to that, the increase in vegetable prices at the supermarket is only 5-10% per week, significantly lower than traditional markets.

At the same time, prioritize direct retail to consumers, limit the situation of collecting and reselling. The goal is to keep the price as reasonable as possible, helping people access a clear, quality and stable source of goods.

The Director of Co.opmart Vung Tau Supermarket affirmed that, in the context of the volatile vegetable market, Co.opmart Vung Tau will continue to expand and upgrade stabilization solutions to keep prices under control, ensuring a smooth supply of goods for people. First, Co.opmart Vung Tau will continue to maintain and expand the price stabilization point of sale model.

The mobile sales points deployed since November will continue to operate and may expand depending on market price developments; helping people easily access green vegetables of clear origin and quality, at stable and transparent prices.

Currently, many supermarket chains in Ho Chi Minh City have simultaneously implemented many programs to stabilize vegetable prices, with many attractive promotions, direct discounts or preferential combos, helping customers reduce living expenses in the context of high vegetable and food prices.
