On the afternoon of May 15, the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City said that within the scope of its functions and tasks, this agency found that the situation of unsafe, poor quality food and food of unknown origin is still complicated in the area.

These violations not only pose a risk to public health but also affect a healthy business environment.

Accordingly, recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Department has discovered and handled many violations in trading goods of unknown origin. Specifically:

Fined 25 million VND for the business of 200 candy packages of unknown origin.

Temporarily seized 50 tons of frozen animal organs of unknown origin in Thu Duc City worth nearly 4.5 billion VND; fined 315 million VND and forced to destroy all.

Nearly 7 tons of smuggled refined sugar were discovered in Cu Chi district; 18,200 bottles of smuggled beer were discovered in district 12.

Through monitoring social networks, authorities discovered more than 1 ton of beef jerky of unknown origin being illegally traded. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a decision to impose a fine of 100 million VND and force the destruction of all infringing goods.

In addition, implementing the direction of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City on the peak of inspection and handling of violations related to food, foodstuff, milk, and pharmaceutical products, the Market Management Teams have simultaneously launched inspections, both in traditional markets and e-commerce.

On the afternoon of May 14, the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Department inspected and discovered a location at Binh Tay Market (District 6) selling dozens of boxes of refined bird's nest (100 grams/box) worth nearly 60 million VND of unknown origin.

In addition, there is a location in District 8 that is selling more than 100 packages of various types of food powder of unknown origin, introduced and sold on an e-commerce website.

In order to control the situation of food of unknown origin, authorities have implemented many synchronous measures, focusing on inspection, supervision and inter-sectoral coordination.

To enhance deterrence, in addition to the measures currently being applied, the Department of Industry and Trade finds it necessary to strengthen a number of solutions.

First, publicize information about violations. Second, increase penalties. Third, consider criminal prosecution for particularly serious violations that cause mass food poisoning or long-term consequences.

Fourth, apply measures to suspend operations or revoke business licenses. Fifth, build and connect violation databases between the sectors of Industry and Trade, Health, Food Safety, Agriculture , Police, and Taxation for closer management and supervision.
