Viettel High engineers research 5G Base Transceiver Station products
At the 25th Military Youth Innovation Awards, the project Research and manufacture of 5G gNodeB base transceiver station supporting eight transceiver antennas (8T8R) was honored with first prize. This is one of the technological products mastered by Vietnamese engineers, which has been put into practical use and exported.
Deputy Director of the Broadband Radio Center (Viettel High Tech), Project Manager Nguyen Chi Linh, said the project was launched in 2019 in the context of the 5G network being identified as a strategic infrastructure that needs to be mastered. By early 2020, the team had successfully tested the first 5G call, making Viettel the 6th company in the world to do so.
"From researching the first 5G base station with basic configuration, we have now mastered and developed a series of products from 4T4R to 8T8R, and are moving up to 32T32R and 64T64R - which is approaching the world standard in terms of broadcasting capacity. Viettel's 5G product ecosystem has criteria and features equivalent to foreign products, 5G download speed is 10 times higher than 4G, supports thousands of subscribers and has super low latency", said Mr. Nguyen Chi Linh.
According to Mr. Nguyen Chi Linh, during the completion process, the research team has overcome "three no's": a dedicated baseband processing chipset for 5G; commercial software solutions and a team of experts with in-depth knowledge of 5G technology.
The team chose to develop 5G on a mainstream computer hardware platform instead of waiting for the emergence of a dedicated chipset. At the same time, they exploited open source software and self-completed 5G baseband processing software. The team also self-developed 5G protocol layer software based on previously existing 4G software.
Thanks to this approach, the time to master the technology and create commercial products is shortened. In 2024, Viettel High Tech has built a technological process suitable for domestic processing capacity and operated a line of 300 large-capacity 8T8R base stations.
5G base station products Made by Viettel have been deployed in many provinces and cities across the country: Hanoi , Ha Nam, Ninh Thuan and are constantly expanding; at the same time, reaching out to the international market, with the first shipments exported to demanding markets such as India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), promoting the negotiation process to expand the market in the Middle East, Europe, the US and Korea.
In addition to the 5G base station, Viettel High Tech's project "Research and development of a simulation system for special reconnaissance tactics and techniques training" was honored with second prize. The project belongs to the field of modeling and simulation. The shooting training simulation system is a wireless recoil generator attached to a real gun, reproducing the recoil force when firing without having to adjust the gun structure - increasing authenticity, ensuring safety, and being easy to deploy in the field.
The 25th Army Youth Innovation Award has 12 first prizes, 71 second prizes, 154 third prizes, and 177 consolation prizes. Compared to the 24th award, the number of first prizes has doubled. The works participating in the Award are assessed to have focused on new issues, especially the development of science and technology. More than 70% of the research works are related to information technology, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, foundational technology, and core technology.
