Traditional costumes of the Tho ethnic group in Nhu Xuan

Traditional costumes of the Tho ethnic group in Nhu Xuan are worn during festivals and ceremonies.

The skirt is the most typical costume of the Tho ethnic women. The skirt has two layers, the outer layer is patterned with brocade and the inner lining. The skirt is tubular, woven vertically from three pieces of fabric with the same pattern. The skirt consists of three parts: the waistband, the body of the skirt and the skirt. The waistband is the part with the most patterns, about 20 - 25cm high; the middle is the body of the skirt, often dyed indigo; the skirt has few patterns, but it is tied around the body of the skirt and does not show off the patterns. In particular, the skirt of the Tho women is often short, only worn from the waist to above the knee, not as long as the skirts of the Muong and Thai people. The material is woven from jute. The shirt usually has two types, blouse and long dress. The blouse is sewn in the five-panel style like the Kinh people. The shirt is straight, not tailored at the waist, almost hip-length, round neck, open buttons in front of the chest, buttoned, two long and tight sleeves. This is the type of shirt worn every day. Ao dai is often worn when attending festivals and ceremonies, similar to the dress of women in Kinh Bac region. The waist scarf is made of cloth, about 10 - 12cm wide, 100 - 120cm long. Girls wear a green cloth belt, leaving the two strips in the front; the elderly wear a yellow belt, leaving the two strips in the back... it looks neat but still exudes modesty, gentleness, and charm.

Men's clothing is quite simple, very similar to Kinh men's clothing. On normal days, men wear stand-up collared shirts with pockets on the left, wide-legged pants with rolled-up waistbands or drawstring waistbands, all dyed brown. On holidays, they often wear five-panel long dresses, dyed reddish brown, flared white pants with rolled-up waistbands or drawstring waistbands, and turbans. The simple costumes of the Tho people show that the cultural and spiritual life of the Tho people is quite rustic and simple; their personalities are relatively gentle and simple. Nowadays, only on holidays, New Year's, and festivals do Tho women wear traditional costumes. Men dress completely like Kinh people on normal days as well as on festivals and ceremonies.

Head of the Department of Culture, Science and Information of Nhu Xuan district, Dam Van Thong, said: In order to preserve and conserve the traditional culture of ethnic minorities in the district in general, and the Tho ethnic group in particular, the district has recently had many solutions to preserve, develop, introduce and promote textile and embroidery products of ethnic minorities, including the Tho ethnic group to serve tourists. Coordinate with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to organize training on methods to preserve and promote the value of cultural heritage related to handicrafts and the art of embroidery on traditional costumes of the Tho ethnic group. The above solutions have contributed to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of the Tho ethnic group from the risk of being lost.
