Like many other households in the village, Mr. Pan’s family’s economic life used to depend mainly on slash-and-burn farming. In addition, his family has a large area of fallow land, which would be a waste if they did not know how to exploit it.

Through the youth emulation movements to establish a career, Mr. Pan had the opportunity to meet many good producers, access preferential loans, scientific and technical knowledge as well as experience in farming and livestock farming. After a process of exploration, learning and research, he was determined to change the way of production.

Through the credit of the Commune Youth Union, he was able to borrow 100 million VND from the preferential capital source of the District Social Policy Bank to invest in building a comprehensive economic model. On a total area of nearly 2 hectares of hilly land, the family previously planted cassava but the efficiency was not high and a part was still abandoned. He reclaimed and planned it into areas for raising livestock, fish ponds and growing fruit trees.

With the production land located near the water source from the stream, Mr. Pan invested in digging fish ponds with a total scale of 7 ponds, each pond is 400 square meters wide on average. In each pond, he releases more than 1,000 fish fry, mainly grass carp.

With the view of letting the animals develop naturally, limiting industrial feed, Mr. Pan only buys concentrated nutritional feed for the first 2 months after releasing the fry. After that, the fish mainly eat natural food such as banana stems, leaves, grass, leaves and cassava powder, rice bran, corn flour... so it can take advantage of the abundant, locally available food sources, both ensuring nutrition for the fish and limiting costs.

Thanks to carefulness right from the initial pond treatment stage, to the stage of selecting guaranteed breeds, all of his family's fish farming areas are stable, the fish grow well, have resistance, are not affected by diseases, and are sold once a year on average with a total revenue of more than 20 million VND/pond. From the income from fish farming, he both pays off bank loans and continues to invest in expanding the model.

With the advantage of large hilly land, Mr. Pan combines raising more than 20 cows, goats and local chickens using semi-intensive farming methods, both in captivity and on the hills. The abundant natural food source, the barns he built reasonably, and proactive vaccination have prevented disease from occurring in the livestock. Currently, he is preparing conditions to dig more fish ponds, raise more local chickens and plant fruit trees.

“Although we are learning while doing it, the initial model shows that it is quite favorable. Compared to growing cassava as before, my family's current model brings in much higher income. In the future, we will continue to learn and research to implement a diversified economic model with more crops and livestock to increase family income,” said Mr. Pan.

Not only is he a shining example of a young man who excels in economic development, Mr. Pan is also a member of the Youth Union, actively participating in local movements and activities. He is always willing to help young people and people in the village and commune gain production experience, together overcome difficulties, and strive to become rich legitimately.
