The only shot on target Arsenal faced all month. |
In the three Premier League games of the month, the Gunners allowed just one shot on target, but it's debatable whether that shot actually counted as a shot.
Arsenal beat West Ham, Fulham and Crystal Palace easily, keeping clean sheets all the while, with the defence performing consistently. The Premier League then republished the only situation Raya had to work on, in the 70th minute of the match against Palace.
That was when Eddie Nketiah - who used to play for Arsenal - jumped high to meet the cross and made a light contact, forcing Raya to rush out to block. However, the Spanish goalkeeper caught the ball as soon as the two collided, making the situation almost harmless.
One fan humorously commented: "Raya would have enough time to read a book in a month." Meanwhile, many other fans were upset because the shot was still counted as a shot on target, causing Arsenal to miss the chance to equal the Premier League record - three consecutive games without allowing an opponent to shoot on target, set by Man City in 2014.
Another account sarcastically said: "Arsenal didn't get a shot on target in the entire month of October. Is that what you call a shot?". Another fan quipped: "That shot… actually exists?".
Not only in the Premier League, Arsenal also kept clean sheets in two Champions League matches in the same month - winning 2-0 against Olympiacos and crushing Atletico Madrid 4-0 at Emirates. In addition, Arsenal also beat Brighton 2-0 in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in the early morning of October 30 when Kepa started.
Arsenal's October was therefore almost perfect. They won all the games, had clean sheets, and a goalkeeper with little to do. A testament to the strength of a defence that is reaching perfection under Mikel Arteta.
