In his welcome speech at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Director of the Institute for European Studies, said that in the current development strategy, Vietnam is striving to achieve the goal of balancing economic growth and sustainable development, in which promoting responsible business practices plays an important role.

Responsible business practices require businesses not only to comply with the law, but also to take measures to assess risks to human, social and environmental factors, and to address potential risks, such as preventing, mitigating or taking appropriate remedial measures when violations occur.

On July 14, 2023, the Government issued Decision 843/QD-TTg promulgating the National Action Program to improve policies and laws to promote responsible business practices in Vietnam, which sets out goals, tasks and assigns specific responsibilities to ministries and branches.

Many countries in the world have included responsible business practices in their development agenda. However, for Vietnam, this is a new issue and poses many challenges in the implementation process. Therefore, it is necessary to study and compare the experiences of other countries as well as Vietnam's experiences in a number of fields and in a number of localities, thereby drawing some policy suggestions.

According to Lawyer Nguyen Van Huan, Sustainable Development Consultant, responsible business is a complex, comprehensive and relatively new concept in Vietnam. However, the development of responsible business is taking place rapidly, requiring Vietnamese enterprises to update and prepare responsible business practices to seize new opportunities.

This poses many challenges for the Vietnamese business community. Businesses not only need their own efforts but also need support from many stakeholders to keep up with the trend, focusing first on raising awareness and capacity.

At the workshop, domestic and foreign delegates focused on discussing the following contents: International experience in responsible business practices; responsible business practices at the local level... and made policy suggestions to promote responsible business practices in Vietnam in the coming time.
