I want to supplement iron for my three-year-old son to prevent iron deficiency anemia and increase resistance. What type of supplement should I give him? (Nguyen Huong, Ho Chi Minh City)

Reply:

Iron is an element that makes up red blood cells. The important function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen to organs in the body. Iron deficiency is common in children, often causing reduced resistance, growth, slow development, and iron deficiency anemia.

There are many types of iron that can be supplemented for children. Common inorganic irons include iron sulfate, iron gluconate, and iron fumarate. Common organic irons include iron biglicinate, iron bolymaltose, and iron carbonyl.

Inorganic iron is often high in content, cheap but has more side effects than organic iron. Organic iron preparations are often easier to absorb but have lower content than inorganic iron.

Iron for children is currently available in three common dosage forms: tablets, liquid drops or syrup. Of which, iron tablets are well absorbed but can cause some side effects such as stomach irritation, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion.

Iron drops are often used for infants or young children who cannot take tablets. The advantages of this form are that it is convenient, easy to take, and has few side effects. However, iron drops are less easily absorbed than iron tablets.

Iron syrup is usually prescribed by doctors for children 1-2 years old, but older children can still use it. Iron syrup is usually the easiest to absorb but can easily have side effects.

Your three-year-old son can take iron supplements as prescribed by his doctor. Depending on the age, weight, diet, and absorption capacity of the child, the need for iron supplements will vary. Overdose of iron supplements over a long period of time can cause serious health problems for the child. Parents should take their child to see a nutritionist for specific advice.
