This morning, June 7, the entrance exam for grade 10 for the 2025-2026 school year in Hanoi began with the first subject being literature. This is the first year that students studying the 2018 generaleducation program will take the exam. This is also the year that Hanoi has made changes in the exam method, exam structure, and the way of calculating admission scores.
Among them, literature is the subject that makes many candidates most nervous because for the first time, the exam will not use materials from textbooks. This change means that candidates cannot memorize knowledge like before, but must have a firm grasp of the genre, have reading comprehension and writing skills to complete the requirements of the exam.
According to the latest figures from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, there were over 102,000 candidates taking the exam, a decrease of about 500 candidates compared to the number registered. Of these, 11 candidates needed support for health reasons.
Compared to last year, the enrollment target for grade 10 public schools in Hanoi this year has increased slightly (accounting for 64% of the number of applicants). Candidates have 3 wishes to enter grade 10 public high schools (non-specialized block).
In addition, candidates can register their wishes to attend specialized schools. Candidates who do not take the entrance exam or do not pass the entrance exam to public schools can register to study at private schools, vocational education - continuing education centers, and vocational schools.
The city has 201 examination sites with over 4,400 examination rooms. Hanoi mobilized about 15,000 officials, teachers and staff to participate in the examination supervision. Over 1,000 police officers participated in ensuring security and safety at the examination sites and surrounding areas.
Previously, on the day of exam registration, leaders of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training inspected the exam sites, ensuring that the exam councils had plans for unexpected situations such as epidemics, heavy rain, and severe weather affecting the health of candidates.
Dissemination of regulations and careful reminders to candidates for prevention are required to be strictly implemented to limit the situation of candidates violating regulations, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Examination sites are also trained to handle issues arising related to candidates in the spirit of trying to ensure the rights of candidates, creating the best conditions for candidates to complete the exam.
The entrance exam for grade 10 public schools in Hanoi will have 3 subjects for non-specialized groups including math, literature, and foreign language. Candidates applying for specialized classes will take 3 subjects together with non-specialized candidates and additional specialized subjects according to regulations.
This year's admission score will be the total score of 3 exam subjects (all coefficient 1) plus incentive and priority points (if any).

Candidates in Ho Chi Minh City enter the math exam
This morning, June 7, candidates took the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City with the last subject being math, with a 120-minute test duration.
At the Hong Bang Secondary School exam site in District 5, many candidates arrived very early. "Of the three subjects, I am most confident in literature. I did well in the foreign language yesterday. I have learned math, so I hope to do well to be admitted to my first choice school," said AL Adam, a candidate at this exam site.
For many candidates, math is a difficult subject. Hong Anh, a student at Tran Boi Co Secondary School, shared: "I have studied my lessons carefully and have had my teachers review my knowledge. I have also systematized my knowledge, but I am still worried about practical problems and geometry. I hope this year's math questions will be easy, especially the practical problems," Hong Anh said.
Mr. Le Thanh Ha, Deputy Head of Hong Bang Secondary School Examination Site, said that this examination site had 553 candidates registered to take the exam, but 3 candidates did not show up on the first day of the exam. "Yesterday afternoon, students at this examination site shared that they had completed the test, so they were in high spirits. This morning, all of them came to take the exam. There was a candidate who forgot to bring pens and school supplies. The examination board contacted his family and his family brought them to him before entering the examination room," said Mr. Ha.
