Professor Tran Van Tho shared with lecturers and students of the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) about the book "Memories to the future - reflections oneducation and the development path of Vietnam".
He wants to tell readers where personal memories intersect with the flow of Vietnamese and world history and culture.
He went through a special journey, from a poor student in Hoi An, Quang Nam , to becoming an international student in Japan thanks to a Government scholarship in the late 1960s. It was a major turning point not only in his personal life but also laid the foundation for his later important contributions as a research expert and development policy advisor.

Although choosing economics was not his original intention, in the face of turbulent times, he soon realized that knowledge of economics would be the most useful tool to contribute to his homeland in the future.
When he arrived in Japan in 1968 - right at the time when the country was experiencing an economic growth rate of 10% per year - he understood more clearly the key role of policy, mechanism and "social capacity" in transforming a country.
Although he has lived in Vietnam for less than 20 years and in Japan for more than half a century, the flow of culture, national history, and the flow of "nuclear family" are always present in him. "Looking back now, I feel lucky because back then I loved literature and history and it became my capital for the future," said Professor Tran Van Tho.
“Leaving my homeland in my twenties, I brought with me my feelings and images of Vietnam. They were mostly formed through books on history, culture, literature or music and were deeply imprinted in my subconscious, forming national pride and love for my homeland. When I write about current issues related to economics, education or politics, those images naturally appear and are connected to the content of the article," he wrote.
Professor Tran Van Tho researched and drew valuable lessons from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (China) and Vietnam over decades of transformation. Among them, it is undeniable that historical and cultural factors have a great influence on economic relations between countries as well as the economic development strategy of each country.
The author also sends a message to students: loving literature, loving music, loving history is a way to love one's homeland, it is a silent flow that will truly appear when needed.
Professor Tran Van Tho (born in 1949, in Quang Nam) is a highly respected economist at home and abroad; an honorary professor at Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan), and received the Golden Ray of the Royal Order of the Japanese Government. In Vietnam, he has made many contributions to economic thinking, serving as a member of the Economic Advisory Group or Policy Research Board of Prime Ministers such as Vo Van Kiet, Phan Van Khai... He is also the author of many influential economic books in Japan and Vietnam, of which 5 books have been honored with the Good Book Award.
