Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Vu Hai Ha stated that, implementing Directive No. 25-CT/TW dated August 8, 2018 of the Secretariat on promoting and elevating multilateral diplomacy to 2030; in order to promote the parliamentary diplomacy channel to contribute to enhancing the position, promoting the image of our country in the integration period, attracting resources for development; with the consent of the National Assembly leaders, the Vietnamese National Assembly will host the Conference of the Executive Committee of the Francophone Parliamentary Union in January 2025 in Can Tho City.
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said that APF is an inter-parliamentary organization that brings together parliaments/legislatures of countries and territories that use French, currently with 90 members. APF was established in 1967 with the goal of representing the will and aspirations of the people of the countries in the Francophone Community. Along with the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), APF is a consultative parliamentary body of OIF with the goal of promoting peace , democracy, the rule of law, cooperation for sustainable development, solidarity, cultural and linguistic diversity.
As an observer since 1974 and an official member of APF since 1991, the Vietnamese National Assembly has been very active through the Vietnam Subcommittee in APF; affirming Vietnam's position and leading role, pioneering and leading activities in Asia - Pacific in the Francophone Community. "The conference will be one of the important foreign affairs activities of the National Assembly in 2025", affirmed the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
At the meeting, delegates agreed that the conference would be held in Can Tho City, because no multilateral foreign affairs activities of the National Assembly have taken place in the Mekong Delta region in the past. Therefore, the organization in Can Tho is also an opportunity for Vietnam to introduce to international parliamentarians in general and in the Francophone community in particular Vietnam's achievements in socio-economic development, and the preservation and development of cultural diversity among localities.
Delegates also informed and discussed the cooperation situation between Vietnam and countries in the Francophone Community; the coordination of Committees, ministries and branches in preparing for the conference; the possibility of organizing a workshop/forum for cooperation between Vietnam and countries in the Francophone Community in the fields of agriculture, food security and climate change prevention and control. Many opinions expressed their agreement with the organization of the Forum on the sidelines of the APF Executive Committee meetings; the content of the forum is expected to focus on the fields of agriculture, food security and climate change prevention and control because these are very practical issues for Vietnam in particular and countries in general.
Also at the meeting, delegates discussed and gave specific opinions on the budget and form of the conference organization, the composition of guests attending the conference, the expected agenda, logistics and related key contents.
