According to Reuters, North Korea's main news sites such as the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, as well as the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs website were all inaccessible on the morning of June 7.
“A major outage is occurring on North Korea’s internet, affecting all connections whether they go through China or Russia,” Reuters quoted Junade Ali, a British researcher on North Korea’s internet.
He said the country's entire international Internet infrastructure was invisible to systems that could monitor Internet activity.
"It's hard to say whether this was intentional or unintentional, but it appears to be an internal matter rather than an attack," the expert added.
Mr. Ali predicted that this incident could be caused by a power outage or some damaged infrastructure equipment.
Officials at the Cyber Terror Response Center (CTRC) of the Korea National Police Agency (KNPA), which monitors North Korea's cyber activities, did not comment on the incident.
As of now, Pyongyang has not made any statement about this incident.
North Korea previously experienced a widespread internet outage in January 2022. The country's internet was paralyzed for six hours due to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which caused government websites and major agencies to crash.
According to Chosun newspaper, less than 1% of North Korea's population, mainly military and diplomatic personnel, are allowed to access the international Internet.
About 99% of the country's population uses the Kwangmyong network, an Internet network managed internally by the North Korean government.
