The 23rd Vietnam Film Festival Awards Ceremony - 2023 took place on the evening of November 25 in Da Lat, Lam Dong . Among the series of feature films nominated at this year's Vietnam Film Festival, there was no sign of "Dat Rung Phuong Nam" - the film that caused controversy recently.
Specifically, in important categories for feature films such as best film, script, special effects, or individual awards for best screenplay, cinematography, director... this name does not appear.
This year the biggest award for a work - the Golden Lotus for best film - went to "Glorious Ashes" by director Bui Thac Chuyen. Other nominees in this category include "Em va Trinh", "Dao, pho va piano", "Mother, Buom day!", "Con nhot mot chong", "Nguoi vo cuoi cuoi".

“Dat Rung Phuong Nam” has an announced budget of 40 billion VND. Some sources say the actual budget is around 60-70 billion VND. Actor and investor Tran Thanh once shared that a large part of the film was devoted to special effects, saying that “this crew includes the best people.”
The film's content at the time of its release was also praised by artists for its story, love for the homeland and national pride. The film earned over 140 billion VND.
“Dat Rung Phuong Nam” is often compared to the TV version “Dat Phuong Nam.” The film also had controversy with the two names “Thien Dia Hoi” and “Nghi Hoa Doan” because they evoked the two controversial Chinese secret societies in the South at that time. Later, the Cinema Department and the filmmakers had to meet to discuss a solution and agreed to change these two names.
“Glorious Ashes” is the first Vietnamese film to be included in the “top 15” at the Tokyo Film Festival, one of the top international film festivals, ranked alongside the Busan Film Festival (Korea). The film also won the top prize at the Three Continents Film Festival in Nantes, France.
After its release in Vietnam, the film continued to receive industry association awards - Golden Kite (Vietnam Cinema Association), nomination in the Asian Film Category at the Da Nang Film Festival and several other victories.
The film was highly appreciated for its art and storytelling but was not well received by the audience, earning only 4.1 billion VND.
In addition to the film award, Mr. Bui Thac Chuyen also received the Best Director award. On the award ceremony stage, he said that making a film is always very difficult and hopes to receive support. This is also the sentiment of any Vietnamese filmmaker, especially in the current context.
This is the first year that Da Lat - Lam Dong hosts the Vietnam Film Festival. The event coincides with the 130th anniversary of the city's founding. Da Lat has also just joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in terms of music .

According to the Director of the Department of Cinema and Head of the Film Festival Organizing Committee - Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, this year's opening ceremony attracted more than 5,000 live viewers and 500,000 viewers on digital platforms.
Speaking at the Award Ceremony, the Director commented that this was also the festival with the largest number of films registered to participate, 177. The quality of feature films has improved artistically, with many unique discoveries in storytelling, and the filmmaking process is increasingly professional. Animated films, documentaries and scientific films are all considered to be of high quality.
