Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, said: “The market is moving sideways as everyone is waiting for the Fed’s move and the tension in the Middle East.”

In the Middle East, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected former US President Donald Trump's call for unconditional surrender. Meanwhile, many Iranians are fleeing Tehran to escape increasingly fierce Israeli airstrikes.

The Fed is expected to keep interest rates unchanged in its policy decision due at 2 p.m. EDT, with investors watching Powell's speech for clues on the central bank's next move.

Mr Trump has criticised Powell for predicting that he would not cut interest rates, saying his previous appointee had done a poor job.

Gold hit a session high of $3,451.04 on Monday, approaching a historic peak set in April. However, prices quickly lost momentum due to profit-taking pressure and a wait-and-see attitude.

Investors are now turning to other precious metals for opportunities, according to a note from Goldman Sachs. "We believe the recent rally in platinum and silver has been largely speculative and lacks fundamental support," Goldman said.

Spot silver fell 0.8% to $36.95 an ounce, after hitting its highest since February 2012. Platinum jumped 3.1% to $1,302.17 an ounce, its highest since February 2021. Palladium was little changed at $1,052.25 an ounce.

According to Tai Wong, an independent metals trader, “High gold prices are causing demand for gold jewelry in China to decline. Investors have high expectations that platinum will replace it. If demand in May remains strong or increases, platinum will continue to rise; if April is just a temporary phenomenon, prices will correct sharply.”
