The US dollar and US stock index futures rose across the board after the US Department of Labor released data showing the non- agricultural sector added 147,000 jobs in June, far exceeding the 110,000 jobs forecast by analysts surveyed by Reuters.

The strengthening US dollar makes gold more expensive for overseas buyers, a negative factor for demand for physical gold.

David Meger, Director of Metals Trading at High Ridge Futures, commented: “Better-than-expected jobs data significantly reduced the likelihood of an early Fed interest rate cut. The dollar consequently strengthened, putting further pressure on the gold market. Most importantly, the idea of a Fed rate cut in July is now gone.”

Currently, investors only expect the Fed to cut interest rates by a total of 51 basis points between now and the end of the year, starting in October, down from the 66 basis point expectation before the jobs report was released.

Gold, which does not generate interest, tends to appreciate in value in a low-interest-rate environment due to its lower opportunity cost.

On the trade side, the US and Vietnam reached an agreement on July 2nd, just before the July 9th deadline when new US tariffs were scheduled to take effect, which helped ease global trade tensions.

On the political front, the Republican Party in the US House of Representatives continues to push through former President Donald Trump's large-scale tax cuts and spending bill, which is estimated to potentially increase the US national debt by an additional $3.4 trillion, toward a final vote.

Despite short-term pressure on gold prices, some experts remain optimistic about the long-term outlook. Carsten Menke, an analyst at Julius Baer, stated: “As US debt continues to rise, investors may become more concerned about the stability of the dollar, which will benefit gold in the long term.”

In other precious metals markets, spot silver edged up 0.1% to $36.61 per ounce. Meanwhile, platinum fell sharply by 4% to $1,362.02 per ounce; palladium also lost 1.5%, dropping to $1,137.45 per ounce.
