Accordingly, the case was officially reopened, similar to the one that the team faced a few months ago. In the past, Barcelona was accused of bribing the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Spanish National Championship, Mr. Jose Negreira, but was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
However, even after the case is closed, the club could still be suspended from European competition at any time, following a recommendation by UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in charge of the case.
Barcelona FC's referee bribery case reopened
Today, the case was reopened, but instead of demanding evidence from Barcelona, Spanish police searched the headquarters of the country's Football Federation with allegations of corruption by officials of this agency, especially the referee committee.
According to Reuters, two of the documents obtained by the police were related to the fact that Barcelona FC bribed Mr. Negreira with a sum of 7.3 million Euros during his tenure from 1993 to 2018. The money was transferred to a private company owned by him.
With these new developments, it can be said that there is more evidence in FC Barcelona bribing referees, and prosecutors have expanded the investigation into the case. If convicted, FC Barcelona will face the risk of being banned from competing in the Champions League.
