(CLO) China has filed a lawsuit against the World Trade Organization (WTO) over tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Chinese goods, the Geneva-based organization said on Wednesday (February 5).

On Saturday, Mr. Trump ordered tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China, but later paused the 25% tariff on the two North American neighbors.

However, the new 10% additional tariff on goods imported from China by the US officially took effect on Tuesday (February 4). China has announced that it will complain about this move by the US to the WTO.

In a statement cited by the WTO, the Chinese government said the measures appeared inconsistent with the US's obligations under the agreement that led to the establishment of the trade body.

Since December 2019, the WTO dispute settlement system has been paralyzed following the collapse of the appellate body, which has the final say in disputes. Therefore, experts say, China's complaint against the US at the WTO will not be effective.

In addition to filing a lawsuit at the WTO, China has also taken countermeasures against the new US tariff policy.

Specifically, China announced that it will impose a 15% tax on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US, along with a 10% tax on crude oil, agricultural machinery and some types of cars, including trucks.

These measures are expected to take effect from February 10. In addition, China has also imposed export controls on some important minerals, such as gallium and germanium, to the US.

In addition to tariffs, China has also launched an antitrust investigation into Google. At the same time, China has also added several US companies, including PVH Corp, the parent company of brands such as Calvin Klein, to its list of unreliable entities.
