China and Russia begin joint naval exercises

According to the press service of the Russian Pacific Fleet, two Pacific Fleet corvettes, Gromky and Rezky, have called at the Chinese port of Zhanjiang to participate in the joint naval exercise Maritime Interaction - 2024.

In a statement, China's Ministry of National Defense also confirmed that the navies of both sides recently conducted their fourth maritime patrol in the western and northern Pacific Ocean, adding that the activity was unrelated to the international and regional situation and did not target any third party.

The practical phase of the exercise will run from July 15 to 17 to demonstrate the navy's capabilities in addressing security threats and safeguarding global and regional peace and stability, it said, adding that the exercise will include anti-missile, maritime strike and air defense drills.

Russian and Chinese ships will hold air defense drills, an anti-submarine exercise involving Chinese anti-submarine aircraft, and practice sea rescue.

After the opening ceremony in Zhanjiang city, Chinese and Russian naval forces conducted military simulation exercises on maps and tactical coordination, Xinhua news agency reported.
