In the 1990s, in response to the urgent need to expand university education opportunities and the Government's policy of socializingeducation , the idea of ​​establishing a private university specializing in engineering was formed. On April 26, 1995, the decision to establish Ho Chi Minh City Private University of Technology was signed - marking the official birth of the school.

On May 19, 2010, the school officially changed from a non-public to a private type according to the Prime Minister 's decision, named Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. On April 26 this year, the school turned 30 years old.

Prof. Dr. Ho Dac Loc said that after 30 years of development, the school has achieved many achievements such as: affirming its solid position in the Vietnamese education system and reaching international standards; developing multi-disciplinary and multi-level training scale; investing heavily in modern facilities and a comprehensive university ecosystem; promoting a training model that links practice and effective cooperation between universities and businesses; building a dynamic learning environment, aiming at comprehensive development of learners.

From the initial 3 majors, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology now has 60 majors, becoming the largest private university in Ho Chi Minh City with more than 35,000 students, more than 100,000 graduates, more than 1,400 lecturers. The school has 1 principal and 10 vice principals. Revenue reaches more than 1,200 billion/year.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology has achieved QS 4-star rating for two consecutive cycles, and has been awarded by the Party and State with 1 First Class Labor Medal, 1 Second Class Labor Medal, 2 Third Class Labor Medals and many certificates of merit. The person who made history for this school is Dr. Kieu Tuan, currently 90 years old.
