Since the mirrors were removed in early January 2024, Southern Alamance Middle School (Graham, North Carolina) administrators said the number of students using the bathroom to film TikTok clips has "dropped significantly," according to USA Today .
The school’s board of directors says TikTok is distracting to both students and staff. In some cases, the school has had to cancel classes and increase security after fake threats and fake news from TikTok accounts.
In an interview with WFMY-TV, Southern Alamance Middle School spokesman Les Atkins said many students “take long bathroom breaks and make TikTok videos,” which interferes with their studies.
According to school reports, some students go to the toilet up to nine times a day, mostly to film clips to post on TikTok.

While other schools in the US ban cell phones in class, Southern Alamance Middle School has removed mirrors from the bathrooms.
According to a 2023 report from the US Surgeon General's office, nearly 95% of 13- to 17-year-olds in the US say they use social media, with more than a third of them saying they use it "almost constantly."
While the report notes some benefits of social media, there are "many signs that social media also poses a profound risk of harm" to children's mental health and well-being.
Most social media platforms currently allow anyone 13 years of age or older to set up an account. According to USA Today , some US state governments such as Florida, Ohio and Utah are considering bills to raise this age to 16.
